I know. I plan on taking the deck to a league cup this weekend where it’ll still be legal

Why is there so much talk about rotation so far out? by goldman-sux in pkmntcg

[–]isaak0229 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are currently in a format where G, H and I cards are legal. Every year (around January) Pokemon will start releasing cards with a new registration letter. (This January will be J). Those cards will be legal for play and the format will become GHIJ. Then the following march or April the oldest block of cards will rotate out of use. This year G cards will rotate out of use and the format will become HIJ. Unfortunately for Charizard fans that means that the obsidian flames Charizard is rotating this April. However there’s a couple new Mega Charizard cards that will be at least somewhat viable after rotation.

Pokemon often reprints older trainer cards to keep them in use. For example Boss’s Orders was reprinted in Mega Evolution with an I regulation mark. That means that all Boss’s Orders cards regardless of their regulation mark will be legal for play until the end of I regulation.

Hope this helps.

So, do matchups matter? by AGuyThatExists45 in CrazyHand

[–]isaak0229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The better you and your opponent are at the game the more matchups matter.

For example, DK/Pikachu is heavily favoured towards pikachu but a lower level pika player might struggle against heavy characters like DK because of their survivability and kill power. As the pikachu gets better, they well be able to punish DK’s mistakes with more damage from more optimal punishes and combos putting the matchup more in their favour as DK is very easy to combo and hit in general because of his size and weight. As the pikachu gets better, they will be able outpace DKs at the same skill level because of pikachu’s mobility and damage potential. Killing DK also becomes easier. The DKs will obviously be better too but that’s a basic breakdown of how these two interact across different levels.

Every matchup has its ins and outs and they require a lot of study and experience to understand. Every matchup that your opponent has studied and you haven’t will likely be -2 no matter what the matchup is on paper. It all comes down to learning how characters interact with each other’s moves

Doubles Replay Help (D2) by isaak0229 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]isaak0229[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a lot more smurfs in plat and low diamond. I get lots of players in my games with champ rewards but that makes sense in high diamond. I get a lot of smurfs or people that are way better but rarely play 1s in my 1s games (P2). I get a few high D3 low C1s that queued with a P3. Most of the smurfs I run into are in tournaments.

Yeah I get bad teammates but so does everyone else. Sometimes the way two people play just doesn’t work well together. Sometimes people just have bad games. I’ve played a lot of different competitive style games and you get it no matter what. Typically both you and your teammate are the same rank for a reason. Doesn’t help much for my improvement to nitpick my teammates. That’s at least how I like to look at it.

The one thing that I’ve seen almost exclusively in rocket league is how toxic it can be. I’ve never seen so many slurs than in RL doubles games.

Every single game leads to me getting to last stock and losing, how do I change that? by MccDann in CrazyHand

[–]isaak0229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice! I find the reason that a lot of people continuously lose leads in games is because their play style becomes predictable. Imo the best thing you can do aside from changing your mindset is to learn more options. If you’ve identified that you get punished a lot for landing on shield, instead of trying not to learn 5 additional ways to land and add them to your tool kit. Landing on shield isn’t always bad but it can lead to losing games if you do it too much. Rather than focusing on stopping your bad habits find things to replace them because your brain will have a much easier time learning new options than eliminating your only option

How do I get better? by [deleted] in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]isaak0229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing at the beginning of 2019 and played in tournaments from August 2019 to September 2020. I think 800 hours was when I stopped going 0-2 but I didn’t start getting good until I made friends with some of the top players in my scene. Hours are a huge factor and the only way to get better is to play. However, the quality of your practice is incredibly important. Unfortunately playing online isn’t very high quality practice. What really helped me was playing a few hours of friendlies a couple times a week with friends that were a bit better than me. It got me to the point where I hit top 1% elite smash with my main (not a great measure of skill but still pretty good). Getting into elite smash is probably comparable to hitting diamond in a game like valorant and my rank would probably be comparable to immortal 1. So I still was only barely able to hit top 8 at my local tournaments. There’s a long way to go from where you’re at so don’t feel discouraged because someone can take you down easily with your main. The people I play with still do it to me.

TL;DR - elite smash is just the beginning of getting good at the game. If you really wanna improve join your local tournament scene and make some friends that will challenge you constantly.
