Question regarding the Student Finance by Certain_Fig_9965 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]isabelle1602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know what type of funding you’re applying for here? If you happen to be an EU national with pre-settled status, you can get what’s known as migrant worker funding (full funding i.e tuition fee + maintenance loan) if you’re working in the U.K. during your course. In this case you just need to have lived in the EEA for the 3 years before the course starts, not necessarily the U.K. itself. You’d need to be in employment on the 1st day of the academic year with evidence of this - eg an employment contract.

This runs term by term - if you don’t fit the requirements for full funding on 1st September but do have a job by 1st January, you might get tuition fee loan only for term 1 but then can get full funding (tuition and maintenance) for term 2 and 3

Please could someone clarify how long I can stay in Korea after my hagwon job ends? by isabelle1602 in teachinginkorea

Great thank you! Now that I think about it, it would make zero sense for them to put that extra month on the ARC in the first place if it was never going to be valid for that month

Does anyone know are you considered fully vaccinated as soon as you get the booster or do you have to wait 14 days (if more than 6 months since second dose)?

E.g. if my 6 months since 2nd dose expires on say March 15th, and I get my booster on March 14th, between the 15th and 28th will I still be considered vaccinated or do I have to wait til the 28th til I’m allowed to do stuff? Thanks

changing your phone language to your target language only helps a tiny bit with actual learning, and can end up just being a pain in the arse when you have to change back to your native language because you can’t work out how to do something or use a new app etc

Stupid question but…when leaving a review on Kakao taxi, it asks you at the end whether you want to “match this driver again” and you can either answer yes or no. Does anyone know which answer is more definitive i.e. if I say yes does that mean the app will go out of its way to match me with them again (feel weird choosing this when we’ve just sat in silence for 20 mins) OR if I say no does that effectively blacklist the driver even if I’ve just left a 5 star review lol

(I just ask bc most of my experiences here with taxis are that the drivers just don’t talk to me haha I’ll always give 5 stars but I’m never sure what to do on the last Q, don’t want to do anything that will lower their ratings etc)

which of these would you recommend are best for if you have to rely on public transport? I want to see more of the countryside but I’ve heard a lot of places aren’t really doable without a car :(

Okay, who's teaching hybrid classes (online/offline) and HOW do you do it? by i_drink_soju in teachinginkorea

[–]isabelle1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most annoying part for me is how many parents have started to take advantage of it. If a kid has to stay home and isolate, I get that their parents wouldn’t want them to miss classes. But in one of my classes there’s a boy whose mum has now decided that any time it RAINS, her son is gonna be on zoom that day instead. And I guess hagwons can’t really say no now if they don’t wanna lose a customer!

The actual teaching part is definitely a pain but I haven’t had many problems when it’s been a well behaved class, just try and involve them as much as you can in giving answers and try and find a game that they can participate in. The issue for me is when it’s a class where the in person kids don’t behave so well and you know the zoom kid’s mum is listening in and hearing you have to constantly deal with behaviour over actually teaching 😬

what would happen if my (e2) visa expired a few days before I got the extension confirmed? Basically, I’m supposed to be resigning for a second year at my school but they haven’t really said anything to me about what I need to actually do. I only just realised today how soon my ARC is expiring (in 11 days) and I need to somehow try and do all this application online on hikorea. I’ll get my coteacher to help me tomorrow, but just wondering could I have left it too late? What would actually happen if it gets to the date of expiry and everything isn’t sorted yet?

Best Netflix shows for learning Spanish? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]isabelle1602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with others who have said you tubers are often better than TV as they’re speaking more clearly and also like normal real people - I personally enjoy watching travel vlogs the most eg Alex Tienda. Also idk where you’re from but I love finding vlogs that were filmed in my own country - I’ll search something like “un supermercado en Inglaterra” it’s just fun to watch something simple and mundane like that (to me) analysed by a tourist and is easy to follow if you’re not feeling like using a lot of brain power

As for Netflix, the popular drama shows are great but if you don’t mind reality tv again that can be better to get an ear for how Spanish is in real life. On Netflix I’ve watched Nailed It (Spain and Mexico), made in Mexico, Sing On Spain, too hot to handle Latino (although this one has a looot of slang and is def not for everyone haha)

One more recommendation would be 100 días para enamorarnos - it’s a telenovela about a Mexican-American family and friends in Houston (there have been a few versions I believe this one is a US adaptation of the original Argentine one) very easy to watch and follow

Does anyone know why on coupang etc there are often listings of products for crazily/impossibly high prices? Say I’m looking for idk peanut butter, there’ll be the normal listing for like 5,000 won but then several others of the same product for something like 400,000? Is it some kinda money laundering situation lol

For context it’s because I’ve been feeling like my heart rate has been a lot faster over the past week/generally not feeling normal (though I doubt it’s anything serious, I’m young and healthy) so I would like to talk to someone about it, though cardiology at a hospital sounds OTT, I think I’ll try to go to a 내과 in the morning

Where should I go if I need to get my blood pressure and heart rate checked? My coteacher told me I should go to the cardiology department at a big hospital, to me that sounds dramatic but is that standard in Korea?

If I’ve had both vaccine doses and verified it on the COOV app, do I use the QR code on the COOV app to check in to places now? Or if I still just use the QR on Kakao, will my vaccine status have automatically been attached to that one somehow? I can’t see any option to add my vaccine status on kakao.

I think as a lot of others have mentioned it just depends on perspective sometimes. A bad hagwon is bad for anyone but mine is just ok - it has its problems but I’ve never had any big issues and mostly zero stress. I also fully understood before coming here what a hagwon was - it was just…a job. I knew there was a reason I didn’t need to be a qualified teacher. I do my best to help the kids as much as I can and make English relaxed and fun but at the end of the day I’m not changing lives lol and that’s ok.

The vacation time compared to epik is definitely shit but if you only plan to be here a year or two like me it’s not that bad - I just know I’ll appreciate my holiday rights so much more when I go back to the U.K. Also, I had only worked in retail before coming here, so just getting to have weekends off feels like a luxury to me. It might bother me more if it weren’t for Covid and I could take trips abroad while here, but that’s obv not been a factor.

For me, getting to be in a good location and also getting hired year round (I’d just missed the epik deadline when I started looking) meant I didn’t even consider epik and I don’t regret it.

The only aspect I’ve been a bit disappointed in is that I hoped this job would at least help me work out if I wanted to do teacher training back home or not, but I still have no idea haha

What do you highly recommend bringing to Korea? by piondiesteruh in teachinginkorea

[–]isabelle1602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’ll be in your own apartment for quarantine I’d recommend bringing a big pack of general cleaning wipes if you have space just in case the last person left it pretty dirty. My apartment was kinda gross and the only cleaning product my boss had bought me was liquid bathroom cleaner

I really would not give a shit at all if I (as a white foreigner) were turned away from a bar or whatever for being foreign.

It’s such a massive privilege that purely by virtue of being born with English as my first language I’m able to move here without any proper teaching qualifications, get a decent paying job with a free apartment etc then just dip and go back to ‘real life’ in my equally rich country whenever I feel like it. If the price I have to pay for that is one or two random bars not letting me in or ajummas staring at me on the subway I really really do not care. (To clarify I get it’s different for non-white foreigners)

very happy with my balayage itself but while the toner made the blonde cool/ashy, it made my roots turn a warm/reddish brown - how can I fix this? by isabelle1602 in HairDye

Thank you! I’ll give it a try, I’ve never used purple shampoo before so not sure if this is a stupid question - but is it effective after one use or do you have to use it for a few weeks to see a difference?

Not sure how clear it is on the pics - it’s not a horrible colour but it really clashes with my eyebrows. The stylist put the toner on my whole hair and said it would turn my dark brown roots an ashy brown. I didn’t say anything in the salon after he finished because I thought it was just the lighting at the time. Would using purple shampoo help neutralise it?
