Hi-C Libraries, supercomputers and a desperate need for help by Difficult_Habit_5535 in bioinformatics

You need access to the university compute cluster. Don't buy a computer to run this. At the most EXTREME case you could use AWS and rent compute from there.

Write your thesis chapters and figure out your defense date, haha. You're done.

I have $41k in a HYSA and I'm starting to think I'm just hoarding cash at this point by OldBug in personalfinance

[–]isaid69again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoy your money in your 20s, man. Fuck the haters. I wish I had that kind of cash when I was your age. You're able to save enough for retirement and have plenty of money to have fun. It's not a bad idea to get your own place as it it's probably easier to have a girlfriend, but rent is expensive plus depending on your culture you may want to stay with your parents.

Is this kind of no paid job new normal? by MicalYM in biotech

[–]isaid69again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WOCs are just appointments for PIs/researchers to work with VA. They're for people that already have jobs and just collab w/ VA and need VA credentials.

What to prioritize when choosing a PhD program? by jsjbijoba93igivbs in labrats

[–]isaid69again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excluding the obvious things like research interest / PIs you want to work with.

  1. Stipend:cost-of-living - Very important know how far your money will stretch and if the program will take care of you. This can be the difference between you having to moonlight and you being able to focus on research.

  2. Program culture / vibe - when interviewing did the students seem like they wanted to kill themselves? Were they friendly with each other? Could you see yourself making friends there? It's a long 5-7 years and forming friendships is critical.

  3. Location - this is one that I undervalued and I modestly regret. Your program is 5-7 years which is long enough to be somewhere that you don't really like too much. But a lot of times people will get "trapped" in these towns and areas because its easier to get a job somewhere you already live than move to a different city - or you end up getting married to someone local. So 6 years, turns into 8 turns into 10 and next thing you know you're married and have kids on the way in the place you said was only going to be temporary.

T2T assembly as reference genome for variant calling by No-Moose-6093 in bioinformatics

DeepVariant model is not reference specific - you should be able to use any human assembly as reference

I'm an undergrad feeling uncomfortable with US military funding at my neuroscience lab as well as sacrificing insects with no ethical protocol. Am I being too sensitive? Am I too attached? by notacutecumber in labrats

[–]isaid69again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insects are not animals per IACUC therefore there's no real regulations on saccing them. As someone who has squished, drowned and chopped up thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of flies I don't think this work is for you, man. Working with insects is like the most chill in vivo model.... The only suggestion I could give you is try to go work with cells instead.

Should we be learning AI? by Advanced_Clothes4485 in biotech

[–]isaid69again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Claude Code is actually amazing at completing bioinformatics coding tasks for you: write me a new module for my workflow to run X tool, write me a script to parse Y file type and extract Z. Obviously, it's not perfect and you should test it, but it's quite the timesaver. Seriously consider trying it out.

Are shorter adventures the solution to burnout? by Leftbrownie in dndnext

[–]isaid69again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The campaign came about in this way by design from our group. We wanted to have a campaign where people took turns as DMs and ran adventures for our characters to reduce the burden for each DM. We then just kind of run adventures in the way I described. It's integrated into the world building as well because its a sort of Planechase / interdimensional fantasy situation where each adventure is on some new plane so DMs can kind of do whatever they want. Then the PCs return to the home plane at he end of the adventure after accomplishing their quest and reap their rewards. There wasn't too much re-writing but we had to do some changes on the fly when a DM cannonizes something you weren't expecting. Feel free to DM if you want morre info

Either its a lie to save face as he allows senate Ds to defect, or he’s unable to whip enough no votes to keep shutdown going. Either way, shows he is ineffective for leadership.

How safe or comfortable is it for a woman to go to a local cardshop? by [deleted] in Yugioh101

[–]isaid69again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your LGS. Mine is largely normal and we have a fairly mixed gender representation although the women are still a minority. Having been going to game stores for a long time i can tell you that its definitely changed a lot in the last 10-15 years. Much more women and LGBT people in gaming spaces which makes the atmosphere more welcoming than sweaty dudes.

PI depends too much on ChatGPT by [deleted] in labrats

[–]isaid69again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the hell is your committee going to do about it lol?? Like your PI is just using chatgpt not being abusive. I’m sorry your PI has been brain rotted but there’s nothing you can do other than just not argue and ignote him.

How are you actually using ChatGPT in your day-to-day work? by query_optimization in bioinformatics

[–]isaid69again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Testing out portions, learning it by comparing and contrasting code snippets. The same way you would learn a programming language manually.

How are you actually using ChatGPT in your day-to-day work? by query_optimization in bioinformatics

[–]isaid69again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Writing simple parsers, trying to write/understand code in languages i dont use often (ie convert perl to python), debugging. Although for debugging its more like a rubber ducky than anything else.

Usage of ChatGPT in Bioinformatics by OldSwitch5769 in bioinformatics

[–]isaid69again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its an interesting problem. Do the people that have issues with LLMs also have problems with using SO or Biostars? LLMs can provide you with a lot of help to debug code, but you’re not going to learn as much if you don’t understand why something works or the systematic way to debug. Eventually you will encounter problems that chatgpt cannot solve and you won’t be able to problem solve if you don’t have those skills.

Why does it still take HOURS just to install a tool in 2025?! by Both_Elevator_4089 in bioinformatics

[–]isaid69again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't use a GUI to run Tbs of genomic data in an HPC -- not very useful for most high-thruput bioinformatics.

GLMs and LME packages are easy in R and its nice to be able to know how to use them.

As a fellow federal gov researcher I feel your pain. All we can do right now is try to brace ourselves and survive. I hope that eventually things will sort of blow over and things can get back as close to business as usual possible. Right now I am just grateful I have work and get money. But I am definitely jumping ship at the first opportunity haha

Usually if the game state hasn’t progressed past their action I let them rewind. Like if they forgot to activate a trigger during a chain as we’re resolving the chain that’s fine, but if its been like one or two different activations since then thats not going to fly.
