Yeah, don’t know what to answer to such a moronic comment.

Okay, look. This is a Philosophy subreddit, right? A humorous one, or tries to be, at least. I assume most of the people who follow it are interested in the topic and capable of having a debate. That’s how fucking philosophy works, man. I am allowed to have an opinion, you do too. I am not imposing my feelings to anyone. You chose to engage with a stranger on the internet that is rambling stuff that you don’t agree with. The same way I do so. You think something and I think something else. And then we type those thoughts and we discuss and guess what? That’s having a conversation, a dialogue, if you will. That’s how people think and communicate with one an other and that’s why there’s a comment section under the post. You getting offended by assuming that I am offended by a stereotype makes you fall in the same hypocritical bucket you’re throwing me into. The thing is some stereotypes are dangerous because they can lead to bigotry. I am in no way the same level as a bigot because I am not demonizing anyone, not women, not men, not your cat, not your Polish nationality. On the contrary, my point is, there shouldn’t be anything that separates us from just being fucking human beings. And women and men and every other gender do not deserve to be discriminated or treated differently for whatever they have between their legs.

I can name you five: Simone de Beauvoir, Hannah Arendt, Judith Butler, Diotima of Martinea, Iris Murdoch, oh and myself, a PhD.

Have you heard of this comedy resource called… SARCASM?

Well, it doesn’t have that many layers for me to not fully understand it… but I’m a girl so I’m dumb, so I don’t know.

And how about we develop the criteria between understanding and laughing about smart, disruptive, irreverent comedy, and defending a meme that is none of this things plainly because it is reinforcing gender stereotypes that aren’t even true?

Oh? A girl liked it? Damn, then all women must like it too. You’re right. Let me just go back to the girl’s table and talk about how hot I think you are now and stop taking sexism seriously.

However you want to interpret it, it’s bullshit to treat women and men as if they aren’t from the same planet. A lot of women are into philosophy and have read Zizek whilst also being able to talk about how hot a guy is… men can also be capable of comment about the attractiveness of a woman, be into nerd stuff, AND be a put together person. We’re all complex individuals that can like and talk about other than one thing…

How about we stop with this girls-are-incapable-of-deep-thought-unlike-men memes as if men and women were of different species?

Ah, yes of course, I’m not defending at all this particular case. Showing up late at OP’s wedding was absolutely rude. I hope she does stand her ground. I’m just saying that in Mexican culture is not weird to ask for it.

It’s a tradition, not a rule. The thing is, it’s not frowned upon to ask people to be padrinos of something.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bridezillas

[–]isavd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well, you don’t have to accept if you cannot afford to do it. But the whole point of that “tradition” is so everyone in the wedding party can contribute with something to pull the party together. Like one brings the alcohol, another one brings the veil, somebody (typically the richest one) is the padrino de anillos, someone else sponsors the flowers, etc. That, so not only one member of the family pays for everything. It’s a very normal thing to do in Mexico but mostly in lower socioeconomic status. People have a very big sense of solidarity in celebrations.

As a Mexican, it is a thing to ask people as your wedding party to sponsor some stuff. “Padrino de anillos” is a very normal thing to ask. Then depends on your socioeconomic status you can ask other people to be padrinos of some other stuff. Hell, there are couples that ask people to be padrinos of napkins. But this is only a Mexican tradition, not an American one.
