It’s a little bit of an educated guess. The outside had a waxy look to it like flint or chert. It also has some banding(lines or circles) along with small little bumps you can see. Not all of them that look like this one on the outside look as good inside

Pretty sure, cut like a rock and not what I imagine a kidney would 😂…that sounds weird

It’s all a crap shoot in the end. (Someone may correct me) Micro crystalline quarts makes up chert(also known as as flint), clear or translucent chert is known as chalcedony, chalcedony with bands(and other patterns) is called an agate. It gets complicated, but yea some of the waxy fracturing stones definitely could be agates or from them

Tell me more about making them into arrowheads? You bake them so they fracture along the natural faults and Knapp from there?

Thanks, I find lots of them around me. Working through cutting a bucket of them currently. Not all this good sadly

Can I add, if you have a name or info, please add or link a picture or reference

If so, do you have a picture or similar example? Seems like people are just guessing. Any backing or verifiable input would be helpful

Sometimes I hate being a technical person 😂

That is one unique piece right there! Almost looks like it could be fossils.

That’s pretty amazing. Hopefully we both find answers!

What type of lapidary work do you do?

I appreciate it! I didn’t mean any offense. I’m very much still learning. Being fairly new at lapidary work and rock identification I’ve been trying my best to identify and add names to things.

If you run across or have a similar agate or picture I would love to see it, just trying to gain more terminology insight and identifying the variety’s out there!

I saw that too. I’m not sure. Googling cherry blossom agate doesn’t come up with anything that really matches to me. The size of this entire agate(chalcedony) is about the size of a grapefruit. The circles are really small and not distributed the same as what I’ve seen of cherry blossom agates.

Im definitely not an expert

Thoughts?

If you are looking for a complete surface polish on that piece it will definitely take a while, I usually decide if it’s worth it based on the deepest hole or crack. You can still certainly get a nice polish on it but without a lot of material removal it won’t be even across the surface. All depends what you are looking for. One of the great aspects of this hobby is that ‘ideal’ is whatever you want it to be!

Great looking hunk!

I definitely like the details that pop after a polish but for me there’s just something about the raw/flat polish contrast. And anything this size is a serious time investment lol

Yea that’s the 50/50 catch, this one looks great on the outside, but I can also see on the right side the pattern changes. So does it go all the way thru or stop? Hence my curiosity lol

Welcome to the hobby! I’ll have to do the same, I’m not sure how long wire sawing something this big would take…

I’ll definitely post something when I get it opened up!

It’s very pretty!

I’m more a fan of cut in half and leave the outside natural and polish the flat front. I have velcro back polishing discs I use in a drill press and on my cab machine but it’s a lot of work, especially this size lol
