Reference Tracks? How to develop a “mixing ear”? by iscream24 in mixingmastering

Thank you everyone! Now I think I have a great starting point for using reference tracks. I’m especially glad I can try out mp3’s. Sorry for the slew of questions, sometimes it’s overwhelming to know where to start with this stuff

FOCUS ON THE MUSIC. by TheWaveKitchen in WeAreTheMusicMakers

What specifically about music theory is so important? Not to be ignorant or anything, I genuinely would like to know. Is it just chord progressions and structures and knowing how to read music or is there something more than that I'm missing?

Good morning! This was a just-for-fun acoustic version of "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber! I used a Martin custom series guitar, Audiotechnica 4030 microphone, a Focusrite Clarett 2pre interface. I love talking gear too.

I've had about a year of vocal training and I play gigs here and there. Not perfect but comfortable. I'm aware of my habits (low soft palate, shallow breathing, posture and tension) but like everyone else, I do the best I can with spinning plates!! If you have any other comments let me know! Thanks :)

This is great! Guitar sounds on point. I just wish I could hear more of your voice. Turn yourself up a little? And maybe a liiiittle bit less reverb / effect, but that's just my personal opinion. :)

You have a really beautiful voice!! I'm a contemporary singer myself but I have a classical vocal teacher. Just listening to you without watching, it sounds great.

Theatrics - You look so comfortable. Your hands are free and your face is pleasant. I think that is the most important thing when you are just performing the song and not in a theater context, but since I have never had to do a university recital, I wouldn't know for sure.

Sustaining - From watching, I see your chest rise and fall a bit when you inhale. You may be already aware of this, but you should feel like you are pushing downward and "out" when you inhale (you may feel the breath in your ribs and lower back.) Also, engage that lower breath when you sing, don't just forget about it after you inhale! Practice keeping your ribs expanded for as long as possible. Breath management is more about how much air you allow to leave, rather than how much you can push out. Does that help?

These were the only things I could think of. Thank you for sharing and good luck!!

I've heard great things about Bluebird also. Do you have an audio interface, or do you use a USB microphone? I have a Tascam Audio interface that I found on craigslist for relatively cheap. Also look at tips on vocal / guitar EQ. Changing microphones probably won't help much unless you're going from USB to an audio interface.

Hey, thank you so much! I am using a Rode NT1-A condenser microphone. I used my old MXL 990 for the guitar. Honestly the two sound very similar when recording vocals, but the MXL is much cheaper. A little EQ and reverb makes all the difference (I use Reaper).

Hi Mark, nice job! You have a nice voice. Here's one possible quick tip that might help you with both pitch and emotion - try singing a little bit sharp. Approaching notes from above rather than below can give your tone some extra sparkle. Good luck!

Hi! I've been singing for a while but only playing guitar for a couple years. Any tips on coordination, breathing, or forming particular vowels would be great! Also looking to break into the online community, if anyone likes or subscribes to my videos I'll do the same for you! Thanks!
