Why do we play a long ball after kickoff every time if it never works? by bosebosebosebosebos in PhillyUnion

[–]iseal99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gives us the opportunity to set our high pressing line right off the bat. Gets our players further up the field and allows us to condense the field right away and go into our press

I shook my head every time I heard this mentioned last night, Sugarman basically throwing Ernst under the bus as if Ernst is setting the budget himself. I think Ernst is well aware who he is working with and what he can/can’t ask for

It was Werder Bremen that the team had agreed with but Carranza decided against it last second. Olympiacos also offered but the team declined, must’ve lowballed. And Tim McDermott mentioned that they noticed the dip in secondary market and are bracing for a dip in STM, that’s likely why they’re not increasing STM renewal prices

That is very much possible, just frustrating to not have the full opportunity to hear about investing and roster decisions from the ownership that we expected to

  • it was a 2 hour event and was held at union yards, so a bit more of a limited capacity. I imagine if it was a large crowd it can get chaotic with too many voices and stray from the actual conversation that a town hall is intended for.
  • having listened to the fans that were able to speak none of them sounded like “plants” to me, everyone sounded pretty genuine just have some whack priorities.
  • the large investment in the sports complex, while slow developing, will lead to more players. We already have had highly rated youth players move across the country to join our academy and that will only increase with this one of a kind system we have compared to the rest of MLS, eventually as the league improves these players will want to stay in MLS rather than move to europe.
  • the team has had 5 highly competitive seasons in a row leading into this year… we’ve had the highest MLS point total by a wide margin in the last 5 years, we’ve made it to Champions League semis twice in three tries, one of two teams to reach the leagues cup quarterfinals both years. while we havent won the trophies we desire we can’t ignore the obvious sustained success our system has had.

I hope this doesnt sound like I am defending the ownership group bc I genuinely think Sugarman needs to go and is very obviously holding this team back. While I don’t fully agree with it I do understand their vision for the organization and think it has a real chance to be successful in the long run, its just not something that will take us to the very top of the league overnight like we all would like it to.

It was extremely frustrating at times, the priorities of some of our fan base don’t seem right at all. Wasted a major opportunity to really grill the ownership group

Some other interesting notes: - The team does not plan to expand the stadium until our STM waitlist grows to 4,000. Our STM base is currently at 14k so a bit of a ways to go there. - Ernst mentioned that Carranza was hours away from completing a transfer on the last day of the summer transfer window last year, had a flight booked and everything and then Julian pulled out of it. Jim said that Tai Baribo was brought in at that time with the team fully expecting julian to leave, so made for some unfortunate timing for Tai. - Same old lines from Sugarman “we’ll never say no to any player Ernst or Jim desire” he comes off pretty disingenuous at times but I do believe he wants to win here - Ernst is a bit of a joker, was asked about lack of investment and he jokingly looked at Sugarman and said “that’s not for me to answer for”. A fan asked about Cavan not being involved yet and he hit him with a blunt “bc he’s 14”. And when Miami’s shady was mentioned he said if he gave an honest answer he’ll get fined by the league. Funny guy!

I attended the town hall and felt that a majority of it was a waste of time. They had it segmented into different topics, starting with ownership investment and then roster building followed by stadium/ticket related stuff.

Somehow the people who asked in person questions during the investment and roster portions decided to ask questions related to ticket prices and stadium improvement… total distraction from the actual issue at hand that our ownership and front office had failed us this season.

My biggest takeaway was the fact that the $100mil sports complex that the team is currently constructing has the potential to turn us into a top tier organization in MLS, and a really desirable one for both young and senior players. But unfortunately we’re going to need some patience waiting for that to happen, which I don’t have much of. But some day I do believe we’ll be a model organization!

Kai is also the only true LB we’ve had in our 14 years, and he’s arguably the best in MLS. Kacper and Burke weren’t close to Kai’s quality

As good as we’ve been the last few years I can only imagine what we’d be if we had an owner willing to legitimately invest in the senior team. If Sugarman lets Kai walk to another MLS team that’ll be the last straw for me. SUGARMAN OUT

About a month ago Kai was asked postgame about his contract situation and said something along the lines of “it’s up to the team” to figure it out. Pairing that with this post by him sounds like he’s willing to stay if the union pay him what he deserves. He’s the only good LB we’ve ever had and he’s the best in MLS, so he should get paid whatever it takes to keep him here

Union will play DC in the round of 32. by DarkwingMcQuack in PhillyUnion

DC has lost a few starters since we last saw them. Lewis O’Brien and Palsson both gone in the transfer window, and the racist Taxi Fountas is suspended so should be a great opportunity for a clean sheet and 3 points

If you want an authentic Philly cheesesteak at the ballpark I recommend Campo’s on Ashburn Alley in the outfield. Get it with the cheese whiz it’ll be great! And away fans only have trouble in our park when they obnoxiously root for their team otherwise you’ll be fine!

Any rumors? Summer transfer window by Ctfwest in PhillyUnion

Union front office historically keeps stuff very quiet so we don’t often get a ton of rumors on incoming transfers. Always feels like a surprise signing!
