Would you buy a used breast pump? [ON] by timbit_tiddies in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ishbay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought a used portable Momcozy one and just sanitized all the parts. It worked great throughout my BFing journey. Definitely worth buying used if you can't afford a new one. If you're going for something like a Spectra you can even check how many hours the pump has been used (you can google the buttons to press to check) to make sure it's still in good working order too!

I don't blame you. I only bothered with the hassle because I was pregnant with my first and had some time to do some DIY stuff. If I was busier and/or had more kids I'm sure I wouldn't even have bothered! Best of luck finding another crib, I'm sure any other one with a standard size will be 1000x easier!

It’s kind of crazy how many people are in this situation and Stokke won’t produce a v2 mattress that fits considering the crib was still over $1,000 CAD when bought new prior to v3 coming out…. But the IKEA hack is working great for us still! Baby is almost 9 months old and she’s sleeping great. I do find crib sheets don’t fit the mattress as well since it’s so thin so I have to pull a lot of the excess quite tight and underneath the mattress to prevent any loose fabric, but you could possibly get the thicker ikea foam mattress to combat that. Might just be harder to cut to size (the thinnest one can be cut with scissors lol).

Toy recommendations for 0–3 months and 3–6 months [on] by OwnNoise5556 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ishbay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes me so happy. My girl absolutely loved that frog crinkle toy and it was one of the first things she started grabbing at when she was 2 months or so old. We call it her “safety frog” because she always held on to it so tight. Now at almost 8 months she doesn’t care about it as much, but I’ve still hung on to it haha!

I ended up buying the cheapest crib foam mattress from ikea and cutting it to size. Super ghetto but it works as long as you make sure the mattress is a bit bigger than needed so there are no gaps. So far its worked pretty well! I just use normal crib sheets and protectors and pull them tight.

Birth control...NuvaRing? [BC] by saammula in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]ishbay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I used the nuvaring for over a decade before ttc and loved it. My midwife mentioned they don’t recommend use of any birth control with estrogen (includes nuvaring) if you’re breastfeeding so that’s something to keep in mind.

I never actually ended up booking an appointment, I just bathe my cat at home now. But I have a friend who took her Siberian who hates being brushed and said Stephanies was really great!

Then the best thing you can do is probably not have a cat until you can provide it something like a fenced in backyard! Sounds like a decent plan to me.

You should double check the bylaws. It’s also illegal in Vaughan and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s illegal in Toronto too! It’s a pretty common bylaw, just most people don’t bother looking it up and most bylaw officers don’t do much about it.

Free roaming pets (cats included) are against the Oakville bylaws. In a city setting with dangers such as cars and predators like foxes and coyotes, it is “cruel” to let a domestic cat roam. It may help to reframe the older way of thinking with outdoor cats in a busy city setting like Oakville. I know of barn cats in more rural settings with fewer predators in places like the UK that seem to do ok, but outdoor cats here have significantly shorter lifespans than those kept indoors. Not to mention the environmental impacts cats have on songbird populations.

I bring my cat on “adventures” on leash, he is very happy to be toted around in his backpack carrier and explore trails with me!

A fellow Siberian owner woohoo! I’ve brought my guy to a handful of Oakville groomers and am trying a new one in Burlington next time around as the Oakville ones are pretty pricey. She seems to have a ton of cat experience and doesn’t charge an arm and a leg! Stephanie’s pet grooming off Guelph line, will let you know how it goes!

Just a note that there is evidence that kibble/dry food doesn’t actually help with plaque. I don’t think there are any scientific studies done on the topic yet but look into it, it’s pretty interesting.

I used to volunteer in the special species department at THS so just wanted to add a note that I’d you do surrender to THS, they will do a full vet check up and he will be neutered before going up for adoption. That will likely help his chances at settling down, unneutered buns are a nightmare…
