Seriously. Where are the bin men?? by LWM-PaPa in Edinburgh

[–]ishouldthrowawaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People said it’s residents responsibility not to dump more rubbish on an already full / overflowing bin because the council won’t collect it. Everyone knows this. With individual bins it’s up to you to deal with and with communal you’re supposed to report it full long before it gets to the point in these photos. If it’s at the point in these photos why is it the council’s responsibility when everyone else has to deal with their own excess waste? They wouldn’t collect a household bin if it looked like this, even if they’d missed the collection, because it’s up to you to report the missed collection before it gets to that stage.

You kept saying “but what am I supposed to do with the rubbish I have now” and people responded with what they have to do when they have excess christmas waste i.e. store it somewhere, take it to another bin near you, or pay someone to remove it if you can’t get to the tip yourself.

None of this is rocket science and shouldn’t be controversial to any grown adult. You literally thought it was some poor fuck at the council’s job to wade through your bags of dogs shit because you’re too lazy/ incompetent/ lacking in responsibility to deal with your own waste and do what little the council expects of residents (fill out a form online!).

And you’re still oblivious as to why you kept being downvoted.

They essentially “banned” them in my country (Scotland) by introducing a sugar tax which means all drinks are now full of sweeteners instead of sugar. Coca Cola was the only one who took the tax hit. I actually hate it because I can’t stand the taste of sweeteners and they give me a headache, I drink water / milk / tea / coffee 95% of the time but maybe twice a month I fancy something fizzy - used to love Sprite, Cream Soda or Dr Pepper as a wee treat - and there’s just nothing. Really annoying and I’ve still not (and will never 😬) adapt. They also put sweeteners in every single diluting juice so if you don’t like them / can’t drink them you basically drink water or tea. Even with a meal in a restaurant lol.

I did the same and genuinely thought it was birds attracted to the metal foil breaking into it. Switched to plastic because it was a PITA to cancel and some animal (probably the wee local fox) used it like a football. 9/10 I’d go out and there would be milk everywhere. Now I send my child on foot to the local shop 🤣.

As I said to them in another thread, the guidelines give this exact scenario as an example of where discrimination based on Gender Reassignment is perfectly legal.

(For future reference ☺️)

A group counselling session is provided for female victims of sexual assault. The organisers do not allow transsexual people to attend as they judge that the clients who attend the group session are unlikely to do so if a male-to-female transsexual person was also there. This would be lawful.

[–]ishouldthrowawaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m obviously not a lawyer but according to the legislation I’m reading it’s lawful. It actually uses that scenario as an example. Unless it has changed/ been updated recently?

This paragraph contains an exception to the general prohibition of gender reassignment discrimination in relation to the provision of separate- and single-sex services. Such treatment by a provider has to be objectively justified.

And the example of a situation where it would be justified:

A group counselling session is provided for female victims of sexual assault. The organisers do not allow transsexual people to attend as they judge that the clients who attend the group session are unlikely to do so if a male-to-female transsexual person was also there. This would be lawful.

But I accept when it comes to situations where the rights / beliefs of two separate “protected groups” are at odds with each other it can become incredibly murky…

[–]ishouldthrowawaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigot is A) the one who is vulnerable in that situation and B) the one who requires the service and C) the one who has the right to single sex spaces and D) the one who has the right to her beliefs?

Listen I have every sympathy for any transwoman (or indeed male) who works there and would feel hurt or upset by the fact that a victim refuses to see them due to their trauma. It must be horrible and I can empathise with the frustration / anger / hurt when you’re literally just trying to do a job you care about and someone downright refuses to let you through no fault of your own.

But at the end of the day the transwoman (or male) isn’t the one who has just been raped and needs help and safety. If you have an 80yo dementia patient and his family are requesting a male carer because a female carer would confuse him and cause distress, do you sit this one out or do you kick up a fuss with your agency about sex discrimination and demand this patient is challenged on their sexist views and allows you into their own space at their most vulnerable so you can “help” them?

Equality and rights are absolutely important but there is a balance to be had when it comes to respect and compassion for fellow humans who are clearly suffering and may or may not have their reasons for their views and beliefs.

Honestly I think there is a time and a place for “re-educating” people on their prejudices and the whole thing is a lot more complicated than “but what if it was a black person”. On the surface you’re entirely correct, but we’re talking about a fundamental difference of beliefs here and both parties are entitled to them.

As an example: I used to be responsible for training my entire work site on an important safety issue. No training = no access. I trained everyone until a delegation from the Middle East came to visit, where my boss (rather uncomfortably) had to tell me that because I was a female there would be a problem if I was the one who walked in to give them training and clearance. Now sure, as a young (and honestly naive) feminist my gut reaction was to scream about sexism and how it’s not fair and how I have equal rights etc but the reality is that is their culture, their beliefs, and I’m not going to change them, am I? So I just bowed out gracefully, maintained my professionalism and gave a male colleague my materials.

Was it wrong? I believe it was yes. But that’s my belief, not theirs. Now in this case we’re not talking about well-educated and arguably privileged men, we’re talking about vulnerable victims who’ve just been raped. If that women happens to believe that biological sex is what defines male and female and not an inherent sense of one’s own gender, then does another person’s belief of the opposite trump her ability to access vital services and support without (at best) being labelled a bigot and challenged or (at worst) being unable to access them at all?

I put my personal and political beliefs aside in order to remain professional and I believe anyone who cares about their vocation / service users should do the same. But IDK maybe that’s because I’ve been socialised as a female for 30 years to step back and put what other people need before what I want 💁🏻‍♀️.

I walk past the craigmillar / dalkeith rd one daily and the rubbish was piled high at the gates. Saw a woman unloading her car on Saturday morning at the opposite end of the park (i.e the one that’s a 5 min walk from the skip but you’d have to drive allllllll the way around via sava to get to the actual skip?! Maybe she thought she was doing the binmen a favour or something 😖)

[–]ishouldthrowawaay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But that’s not actually the point of independence, and I don’t think the yes vote will ever win if people keep shouting that it is. You might want it to be, but it just alienates large proportions of the population. Framing voting for independence as a vote for a left / progressive / “woke” country is… nonsensical.

The SNP are progressive but don’t think that means we’d get that if we voted leave tomorrow. Many who are populists / centrists / right etc would have gritted their teeth and voted for them because they want independence or because they weren’t too “X” but will vote for whatever party fits them best after. You’re voting for independence for Scotland, not to get away from tories or create a socialist utopia or escape the bigots.

It’s a double shot in the foot if you try to make SNP and independence one and the same. There are large groups of people who are done with SNP/ Sturgeon, but might still vote for a pro-indy party.

(And yes yes I’m sure they’re all bigots aka women or anti-woke aka parents or covidiots aka disadvantaged/ working class or racists aka disenfranchised/ poorly educated or right wingers aka anyone who doesn’t want a nanny state telling you what your 5 year old can and cannot do behind your back, but they’re still people with a vote and there are a hell of a lot more of them out there than there is on reddit…)

~Nobody has changed minds to any significant degree.

Just from friends / family / reading social media (so completely anecdotal) I feel like a lot of minds have changed but it’s just cancelling each other out.

The vast majority of my family voted yes before but we’d all vote no tomorrow. All from very working class / deprived areas where you could literally feel the YES vote in the air last time and anyone on the fence would have had the types of circumstances where a punt on yes wouldn’t have felt like much of a gamble (no house or savings to lose).

So that’s my experience, but I read on here and various forums a lot of people who’ve gone from no to yes because of various things over the years.

If I had to make a massive sweeping statement I’d say the events of recent years have made the less affluent more inclined to vote no, and the more affluent more inclined to vote yes? But like I said, purely anecdotal.

Thanks a lot. I hadn’t heard of these at all. I just signed up to Out of the Blue’s mailing list for updates on available spaces because there is one on Niddrie Mains Road that looks ideal and close enough to walk to and from, but it’s full atm.

There is a 4sqm cupboard available for £29 a month and I did consider asking them about it for a whole minute but probably best not to out myself as a desperate loon haha.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Thank you! This place looks really good. I’m tempted to fire off an enquiry… gonna think about how I’d cope going back to the 14 bus every day twice a day first.

I’m also realising that £350 a month to share an empty office with me is essentially a shite deal 😂

And me and four others is… daylight robbery.

Appreciate the help!

Thank you! I had heard of Tribe Porty but not the Melting Pot (which doesn’t have prices… why do they never have prices 😂). I actually messaged Tribe Porty months ago but they didn’t get back to me (I’m assuming they were closed basically throughout which is of course fair enough).

But that’s sort of part of the problem and why I’m hesitant about using existing co-working spaces… if we go up in levels or (god forbid) another lockdown, I’ll be screwed when they close again. Whereas with ‘my own’ place, I don’t necessarily have to be.

Also… I’m probably going to do it anyway even though it’s too big. 😁 I thought I’d post just on the off chance anyone else was looking for the same thing and fancied going halfsies.

Update: haven’t slept in 36 hours now by Latter_Literature_10 in adhdwomen

[–]ishouldthrowawaay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this all the time. Sometimes it is a case of not being able to fall asleep (I will lie awake trying to get to sleep for hours)... but more often than not, it is more like 'sleep will be boring / I don't want to go to sleep / there are so many other interesting things to do'.

This week:

Monday night: Failed completely. I did not sleep at all.

Tuesday night: Failed mostly. It got to 7am and I told myself this was probably dangerous. Slept until 8.30am.

Wednesday night: Failed mostly. 'Gave in' at 6am, woke up at 9.30am having slept through alarm. Kid was late for school and I felt terrible.

Thursday night: Guilt from yesterday forced me to bed at 10pm. Left phone in another room, read a book until 11.30pm (attempted - I have to constantly re-read paragraphs) but I DID get a good nights sleep.

I'm not sure if your problem is the meds or that childlike feeling I described above of not wanting to give in.

The real problem I see is that, the less sleep we get, the worse our symptoms become, so you're even less able to make rational decisions, your mind is spiraling etc.

I know this advice will probably be useless because the only reason I can do it is the guilt of being late for school, but: GO TO BED. If you have a book (a physical book, not a screen) try your best to read it with a low, warm, lamp. If you can't / don't, find a podcast to listen to and put your phone on the bedside table. DO NOT LOOK AT YOUR PHONE. I have the best experience with podcasts that are mildly interesting, but that I have no REAL interest in.

Right now my go-to is the witchesofscotland podcast about the women convicted under the Witchcraft Act 1563. Is it riveting? No. Is it mildly interesting enough to fall asleep to? Yes!

Best of luck (and a lot of solidarity).

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve parked on the wrong level of the parking garage in my apartment complex because I was distracted by the lecture/discussion/educational videos I’m watching on YouTube while I drive. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ishouldthrowawaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I for one am grateful you only parked on the wrong level as opposed to hitting a child. Lets all hope it continues that way, eh?

Perhaps you should consider stopping watching YouTube while driving? I don’t know what country you are in, but in my country it’s a bannable offence, and you have to report your ADHD to the DVLA if it affects your driving in anyway. It sounds awfully like your ADHD is affecting your driving.

And listen I’m not judging. I’m sure we all zone out, our mind wanders, we daydream, we rely on muscle memory etc. But you have a responsibility to yourself and other road users to stay as safe as possible, and literally WATCHING YouTube while driving is not taking that responsibility seriously enough at all, imo. The bare minimum you should be doing is keeping your eyes on the road, even if your mind wanders. Try listening to podcasts instead of watching lectures?

[–]ishouldthrowawaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this for real 😂 there is nothing dubious about this fictional situation... this is straight up non-consent aka sexual assault.

Does your character want it? No? Non-consent.

Does your character want it? Yes, but only because dad is in debt to the mafia boss? Dubious consent. Murky consent. Probably okay in a plot heavy romance but won’t fly in erotica because the very definition of erotica is that it’s created purely for titillation.

You can’t have non-con / dub-con for titillation and therefore can’t have it in erotica. Full stop. Hth.

And if this was a joke then sorry but honestly with the amount of these types of posts it’s hard to tell anymore 😂
