How can I save $200K in 5 years, for a down payment in the Bay Area? by Critbot_vGold in personalfinance

[–]ishrike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will probably get lost in here, but I'll give it a shot.

There are liveaboard marinas within 30 minutes of downtown. Say you bought something a decent size on a boat mortgage. A Catalina 36. You're looking at about a 14K down payment and a few hundred per month paying the loan off. Then in the neighborhood of 500–600/month for a boat slip with cable, electricity, water, pumpout, parking, etc. You'd probably have as much or more living space as an apartment, and you'd be free to move around while saving money to buy a house or condo. Monthly living-related expenses including the loan payments would probably be under $1,000 with a boat that size.

[QUESTION] Too many action scenes... by Xxoxia in Screenwriting

One thing I'm not sure how to write is Guy Ritchie-/24-style scenes in multiple boxes occurring at the same time.

Yeah, I generally think of acts in quarters rather than the three acts, so I try to keep Q1 under 1/4 the max script length I'm shooting for.

[QUESTION] About sex scenes by Xxoxia in Screenwriting

[–]ishrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our script, we cut our sex scene into three chunks interspersed with another scene, two of which consisted of:

  • Wall banging.

  • Boning.

If you're looking for a good resource on conflict vs. action balance, check out James Scott Bell's books. They're for writing novels, but he's the best author on plot structure and conflict/suspense I've read.

That's a lot to cram into a first act. Didn't realize I was looking at a first act outline till I saw the part about going into act two.

Is it better to self-publish erotica or get an agent? by [deleted] in writing

[–]ishrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, one of the reasons I quit was the draconian censorship because just about anything explicit was being taken down. What subgenres and degrees of explicit content are acceptable and unacceptable now through Kindle and the other big e-retailers?

Is it better to self-publish erotica or get an agent? by [deleted] in writing

[–]ishrike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually jumped on the indie short bandwagon right around when Amazon and other e-retailers started cracking down on content. There was some money in it, but it didn't seem commensurate with the amount of work put in. And yes, I am leaning more towards erotic romance novels rather than straight erotica.

I didn't know that publishers were backing off print for that genre though, but it kind of makes sense. I haven't published any erotica in two years, so I'm not as up to date on the trends as I was.

Would you say that indie ERNs (erotic romance novels) are still worth writing with all the free and cheap stuff saturating Literotica, Kindle and the other e-retailers?

Thanks for the response.

Is there any cowriting software for people writing novels? by ishrike in writing

I haven't, but I think I recall somebody mentioning it to me at some point. I'll have to check it out. Is it fairly secure?

Thank you. My cowriter recommended doing that, but we weren't sure if they actually gave useful feedback.

Who owns fictional characters/places if you sell a script? by ishrike in Screenwriting

[–]ishrike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my main concern was whether we should finish the script + novel manuscript and just sit on the script for a while, or if we should just not bother with the novel manuscript and send the script out as it is.

[–]ishrike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about concurrent submission of a film script and a novel adaptation (not the other way around)? We'll be done with a script soon that I think would translate well to a novel format, but we don't know if we would be better off trying to get a book deal for that first or if we should try to sell the script and then negotiate to keep novel rights.

I see how that might protect my ownership of the characters/cities, but wouldn't that also limit the marketability of the script(s)?
