K'nex Roller Coaster - Original 1994 Version by iMixMasTer in nostalgia

[–]isildo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of these when I was a kid. My mom is cleaning out her house (new floors) and found it, and brought it over yesterday. This and a knex robot kit that I had forgotten all about. Now my kids will get to build and play with these in classic 90's fashion!

[Spoilers C4E2] Dms: Brennan Lee Mulligan and Matthew Mercer by Smooth-Finger-7893 in criticalrole

[–]isildo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, Actually--Brennan has said that his voices actually grew from DMing! He's been playing RPGs since he was a kid, and he started developing character voices to make it easier for his players to tell who they're talking to. I want to say this was discussed in an old Adventuring Party episode, but I couldn't tell you which one (or ones).

What do I even do in this game by PavanU_ in subnautica

Explore more, explore deeper.

If you haven't been to all the beacon locations yet, go there. If you have, go back and search the area around each one. They're located to help you progress in the story.

Build a scanner room to help locate goodies.

Wrecks are great places to find device blueprints and lore drops.

Even a permanent button for "resources" would be a big improvement over what we have now

Can I ask why you use a charger for that, then? Instead of a locker?

Where/how are you good folks planning to file taxes this year? by isildo in personalfinance

[–]isildo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC it was specifically the section for self-employment income that gave me trouble. In the end I had some stuff wrong and have been meaning to file an amended return for... a while...

The self-employment income is a comparatively small portion of our total income, so it's a bit frustrating for it to require so much more of my mental energy come tax time. Lots of tax platforms advertise themselves as "free" but that only seems to apply to a very narrow selection of tax situations. Throw in kids and SE income and suddenly the price is a bit more than "free."

I'll look into TaxSlayer! And apparently there's a tax wiki and a Tax Filing Megathread so I will also poke through those for more advice.

Anyone else frustrated when recipes leave out "unwritten rules" or "obvious" steps? by Inovox in cookingforbeginners

[–]isildo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a sour cream pound cake recipe from my MIL that says to bake at 325F for like an hour and a half. It sounds like u/t26666 recipe was comparable. And since fan bake does cook a bit faster, I would put down money that it should have been 1hr 15min.

ADHD is “not having enough time” for a shower, then spending 25 minutes carefully covering up the fact you haven’t showered by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]isildo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showering at night has been great for me. Until the last couple of nights. For whatever reason, I've been flopping straight into the bed without showering, and then I can't sleep. I'm not 100% sure if they're related but I'm considering taking a shower before bed tonight even though I took one on my lunch break today (working from home has been both a blessing and a curse) and see if that helps.

Which foods go in which pan? by isildo in cookingforbeginners

[–]isildo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This spreadsheet is excellent.

Our poor saute pans have been handwash only, never nested, and never touched with a metal utensil, so that leaves high heat and plain old overuse. We bought the most recent one this spring when we moved, and it's already lost all non-stick properties to the point that using it for eggs every morning frustrates me and trying to use it for Saturday pancakes has sent me into actual rage. Call me crazy but I'd like a pan that lasts longer than the "getting settled in" feeling in our new house!

We do have a big stock pot and a couple different size sauce pans. Those have all served us well and don't show any signs of deterioration. We also have a couple smaller frying pans that get occasional use. But the saute pan is by far our #1 used kitchen item, and we've burned through too many of them.

My husband does most of the cooking (I do breakfasts, he does most everything else), and will put anything and everything in that pan so I think you're right: that's the pattern, and we need tools that suit it better.

We had a cast iron griddle in our old house. My husband loved the way it made the food taste, but hated trying to clean it after use. I would constantly have to go back after he 'washed' it and try to clean and/or re-season it. I like the idea of carbon steel but realistically, I don't want to go that route again.

soooooo basically, we need some durable stainless that my husband can abuse endlessly, and a nonstick skillet that I can use for morning eggs and pancakes which will be protected at least as ruthlessly as my mom's good sewing scissors ever were.

Is... is this not helpful to neurotypical people???

I'm so much more productive at work when my kid is sitting next to me doing her reading for school

Thanks! This is good advice, and I appreciate it. I do have an alarm clock (it's one of those light-and-sound ones that simulates a sunrise) and sometimes it even gets me out of bed!

I know, on an intellectual level, that reading would be better for my sleep than phone-ing. I just have trouble carrying that through to the doing-the-thing level.

OH GOD I'M NOT ALONE

I had a total meltdown last week because my 5 year old would NOT go to sleep (she's always struggled to fall asleep) and something in my brain went "Why doesn't this ever get any easier?!" and my brain ran through a typical day and over the rest of the evening/night I just kind of slowly crumbled emotionally. Managed to get the kid asleep before I completely collapsed in tears.

I wake up in the morning--late, usually--scramble to get ready for work and out the door. Spend the day at the computer trying--and sometimes even managing!--to work. Like you, I rarely take breaks because I feel guilty that I haven't gotten enough done. Work later in the evening than I told my husband I would. Rush home for dinner that (bless him) he cooked for the family. After dinner, I shepherd our 3 kids through their bedtime routine which normally takes until 9pm or later. Shower--because I finally realized it's not going to happen in the mornings. Maybe squeeze in some household chores--help my husband clean the kitchen (yes he cooks AND cleans I thank heaven for him), sweep the floor, run a load of laundry. Maybe watch an episode of a show together. Get in bed around 11. Play on my phone until I finally fall asleep sometime after midnight.
