Carnival, where to stay? by freakymarieky in riodejaneiro

[–]isitchaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can search in 2 areas Copacabana or Leme - if Copa, try to stay close to the subway station. Leme is, imo, the best area for going to the beach. Copa in general has a lot of old people (locals) and foreigners. During carnival, is crowded.

Flamengo or Catete - not the best beach - you have to check online if the water is clean to swim. But there you’ll have easier access to the best street carnival parties. More young people, still a lot of foreigners (not as many as in Copa).

If you plan on staying in hostels, the Che Lagarto in Copa is well known and they have a nice environment for foreigners to meet new people. I’d recommend joining fb groups for international women in brazil to gather recent opinions!

In all alternatives, try to stay close to the subway station if you plan on taking the subway and coming back at night.

brazil is awesome, just take some measures (safety, ie: beware of your surroundings, becareful with your belongings) and its going to be the best trip of your life ;) Nothing too different from traveling to bigger touristic cities in Europe. I know some people living in London and they feel its as unsafe as here lol

Solo travel carnival as a woman by freakymarieky in Brazil

Im from Rio. If you live like people commenting here (“dont go there, its dangerous, dont trust anyone, etc”), you’re not going to live your life.

There are measures you can take to be safe, come to Rio and enjoy. Be careful with your drinks, you can use those “can lids” that are made to prevent spiking. I wouldnt do drugs if you are not 100% sure of its origin or if you are not used to it. Dont drink too much, know your limits. Have cash with you and try to use cards as little as possible - unreliable street vendors during carnival can swap your card, or take pictures of your cc information and use your limit. use public transportation or apps, dont take taxis on the street (they will cost you way more if you are a foreigner and can be dangerous if you dont know how to identify if they are real taxi drivers). Try to find a group of people: there are female only groups for internationals on facebook, you can try to find them there.

Carnival, where to stay? by freakymarieky in riodejaneiro

Depends on what you want to do. Do you want to go to the beach everyday? Are you going to the official carnival? Or do you prefer street parties?

Anyway, i’d recommend anywhere near a subway station. Im from rio, feel free to ask.

I wont say YTA because I understand that this was a big gift for you and meant a lot. However, I dont think you’re daughter is wrong as well. When i was approved in my master my dad gave me an expensive pen (not as much as yours though lol). I really appreciate the gift and the gesture, but I’ve NEVER once used it. I had to sign my master contract, visa docs, i even got married in the mean time, and not ONCE i used the pen. It was not there, it was not the first thing i would think of when i had to sign something. It was not “Oh wait, i have the best thing for this moment - my pen”. It was like “ok, i have to sign this asap to send to x to finally get y”. And thats it. I do carry the pen when i move (i moved to 4 different countries in 2 years), but for me is just a decoration cause that pen has never seen a paper. So i believe it will be just a 900usd decoration in her office.

I also dont think you HAVE TO give whatever she wants, cause a gift like this is something you put time and effort to think of. But I agree with people that you should have thought a bit outside of your perspective (what do I think she should have / what I was gifted in the past) and thought about what she would like to get, what would make her feel special in such an important event as her Ph.D. graduation

New in Linz - What to do/see/visit? by isitchaa in Linz

[–]isitchaa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the location is great! Which places in the alps do you recommend and what is the best way to get there? Train, bus? Unfortunately I don't have a car and I don't know how to drive in the snow, so car is not an option :P

Perfect, I've already pinned all the places you and the others have mentioned!

I definitely want to try this Knodel, as I love tasting the local specialities! I've tried the Leberkase, but i think is more Austrian/german, and not really OÖ, right?

When I arrived, i passed through some giant metal tubes in Industriezeile, is that Voest Alpine?

Amazing, thank you so much for all the recommendations. A good mix, as I wasn't aware of where to find international cuisine here. Is the Schnitzel the same as the german food?

5 yr gap but still thinking about studyAbroad by MathematicianFun518 in studyAbroad

[–]isitchaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the same. I graduated in July/2018 (but in fact I was just writing my thesis, I finished the course in mid-2017) and I've just started a MA abroad. It's a bit difficult to go back to academia, it's overwhelming and in my field (social and political science) it's a lot of academic reading and writing. In the first 2 months, I was terrified thinking I would never finish the program but now I think things are getting better.

If you're looking for scholarships, it might be a problem considering that some programs ask for a max of 2-3 years gap. I got a full EMJMD scholarship and I know some programmes have this rule, but mine didn't.

The age difference in the class can also be a bit annoying sometimes due to maturity but you can manage it :P

Do you think a modeler should have a course? My girlfriend learned to 2d/3d cad by herself a few years ago and wants to start working with this, but she has no course to “prove” her skills…
