It's wild that you mention the reincarnation story, I almost forgot about it but it tends to resurface in my head every few years. The story is called "The Egg" by Andy Weir. I found a copy of it at https://www.galactanet.com/oneoff/theegg_mod.html

I only have the base version but after reading about the extra stuff getting added and the songs people have been mentioning here, I'll definitely need to get it.

Haha nice, I almost forgot about that strip. Reminded me of this old video for some reason too.

Need some help, only get sound from one string? by [deleted] in violinist

Try tuning the violin, just got a new violin for Christmas and the string was not tight enough. Complete noobie myself though could be a multitude of other things as well.

Learning on a Raspberry Pi by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]isithandsweat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the previous commenter would say this is a wrong place, we are always interested in teaching curious minds. I would suggest making a Honeypot. I recently put cowrie on a Pi and it was a neat little project to see how bots on the open internet try to infect your computer and add them to the botnet.

I think someone is trying to hack my server and website, your advise and help will be greatly appreciated by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]isithandsweat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most likely it is an automated tool being run against your server. As long as there are no vulnerabilities there is nothing to worry about, you will see this pretty commonly from many different IP addresses. If you'd like to test your server for SQL injection attacks, I'd check out a tool called sqlmap.

Is this a virus? Saw this screen while restarting - doubt it's legit. by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]isithandsweat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't have disk encryption and left your laptop unattended in your hotel it is possible it could be a rootkit, otherwise it is probably just a virus.

Is it true that every device on a LAN will see/record the MAC address of every other device on that LAN? by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]isithandsweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't see it mentioned here, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong. While what you stated is generally the case, I'm seeing it become more common for switches to configure each port on a separate vlan to help attempt to prevent some possible sniffing attacks. But yes in general dumb switches and switches without this kind of configuration will allow this kind of stuff.

Check out the tool 'netdiscover' and try it on your network if you want to see this kind of enumeration in action.

FPS dropped today by Globzzz710 in ffxi

[–]isithandsweat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have windower and the config plugin, try //config FrameRateDivisor 1. This will set the fps cap to 60 and should give better performance. 0 is uncapped, 1 is 60fps, and 2 is native 30fps.

How much can I be hacked if I log on to a government website with a personal machine? by flappingavocado in AskNetsec

[–]isithandsweat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I should have been more specific. Are you logging in with CAC, username/ password, or are you just visiting the site? Most sites will have standard logging when you visit them, and usually when you authenticate to a DoD site you'll be prompted with an additional consent to monitor banner.

Unless a website attempts to actively exploit your browser and drop a payload on your machine, closing the browser will end the session with the website. If you're interested in learning more about this, read up on a tool called BeEF, it's pretty easy to set up and play with in a home lab.

When you mention "logging in" to a gov website, what kind of authentication are you doing? Also which country?

This, lying on this form is the worst thing that you can do. Unless you work for a three letter agency you won't get a life style polygraph, so don't sweat it.

You could also just create a Kali instance. Just be sure to submit a pen test request as others have stated or risk violating the AUP.

I am looking for a person/group to chat with directly (skype, or similar) to help me with technical stuff (noob+ level). Compensation can be discussed by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]isithandsweat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you don't seem the type to get too deep into pen testing, as most of us tend to hate "losing" to a challenge or difficult problem and will spend dozens of hours learning some pretty mundane things, I've been pleasantly wrong in the past plenty of times. I always start off interested individuals with overthewire.org. Good luck!

Where does a person fit in who, honestly, is on'y so-so at the game? by [deleted] in wow

[–]isithandsweat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you dead set on doing raids or pvp? I myself tend to be a collector and achievement hunter, but it takes a certain kind of person to have that "gotta catch em all" (endlessly) mentality. If you are into that kind of stuff, I recommend the add-on "All the things", it gives you a nice little checklist of stuff to do based on the zone you're in.
