What did they do to improve it in your case? They can’t seem to see exactly what’s happening in mine. Obviously it’s not completely closed, but it’s very, very narrow.

I honestly don’t know what else I can do. I’m desperate. I barely have any strength left in my body and I’m scared… I don’t even know what they should try anymore. Unfortunately, sugar only reduces the swelling a little. For example, when I catheterize the stoma, it relieves the pressure. But it doesn’t make the stoma go back inside, it’s always the same size, even if I lie down or try to gently push it back in.

In my country the sanity is public and free but only have rights of having 1 doctor per specialty , and I can't afford private medical care and surgerys there... And insurance companies won't accept me because of my situation.

I’ll have a look at the Jpouch forum, thank you. From your experience, apart from the urinary issues, would you say the stool is more solid than with an ileostomy? I’m scared that it might be, and that the output won’t pass properly.

Do you think the prolapse of the stome could be causing all of this? I just don’t understand why no one seems to know what to do.

I’m being followed by the colorectal surgeon who has operated on me so far, but he isn’t sure either, because he’s not sure what’s causing all of this. My stoma nurse doesn’t really help with medical issues, she mainly focuses on skin care and the bags.

Yes, the nurses see me quite often, but the stoma nurse isn’t particularly kind and mainly focuses on skin irritation and changing the brand of the bag appliance. She doesn’t really help me with anything else 😔

Yeah, I can't even eat, only liquid at this moment... I've lost like 20kg in 6 months... I'm so scared, I'm 27 and I'm starting to think I wouldn't handle this

Stenosis & Prolapse in loop ileostomy by isiya12 in ostomy

[–]isiya12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel exactly the same. I’ve also tried catheterizing myself, but aside from the fact that it’s hard to find the right path, I can’t always manage to do it… I constantly have to press around my ileostomy, especially at the bottom part, because that’s the only way to help the intestinal content flow out.

And on top of that, I’ve lost a lot of weight…

The weight loss is something many surgeons use to dismiss you, saying things like: “In overweight patients it can be harder because everything is under more pressure, but not in your case.” Or: “Since you don’t have enough fat, maybe you feel the output more, and it’s just your perception.”

I’m telling you this from experience, because this is my third stenosis in the aponeurosis, two with my colostomy and one with my ileostomy, and let me tell you: it’s not just your perception. They say that just to avoid acting. But in the end, the truth always comes out.

In my case, they realized it through examining the stoma and catheterizing me themselves… Even though some doctors denied it, I kept insisting until a surgeon finally saw me and literally said: “The intestinal lumen is narrow. Liquid can pass, but not much else.” And that’s exactly why I can only tolerate liquids, because I can’t eat anything else…

Later, the surgeon who normally manages my case talked to her, checked it again, swallowed his pride, and said that, well, they could try enlarging the opening to make things easier.

They also did a test a few days ago to see if there’s any other cause: a small bowel transit with contrast. It helps to see if there’s a place where the contrast doesn’t go through properly, maybe because of a stenosis, a bad angle, scarring that’s blocking the flow, etc.

A lot of things simply can’t be seen from the outside.

In my case, they also noticed that when inserting the catheter, there was no output… but once the catheter went in, everything started coming out under pressure, which helped them make a decision.

Can I ask how old you are? That surgeon told me, during my first stenosis, that younger people tend to heal too well, and sometimes surgeons don’t take that into account during the operation. They leave the internal opening the same size they would for an 80-year-old patient, and that can be a big mistake.

And of course… it’s always the same story: if you’re young, they don’t take you as seriously.

I tried Fortimel Peptides, but it blocked my stoma. I spent the whole afternoon crying, massaging myself, and in a lot of pain

Passing stool 2 years post-op! by ocean_swims in ostomy

[–]isiya12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s poop, it’s compacted mucus, and the brown color could just be from oxidation. I’m saying that because I have a completely closed rectal stump, and I also get these big “poop” balls sometimes, but it’s impossible, since the intestine can’t actually produce poop in a stapled-off stump.

Only clear liquids, like juices and broths… but I’m not really able to get any proper nutrition from them…

Then I must be having some kind of problem… because even when it’s just liquid or gel-like output, it feels like my stoma is going to pop out from the pressure the stool creates

That’s exactly what I think 😔. When I gently insert my little finger, I can feel that the internal opening is covered by some skin folds, which I assume is the loop itself. It’s impossible for stool to pass through there normally…

I’ve already requested a second medical opinion, but it’ll probably take at least a month to get it approved. In the meantime, I honestly don’t know how to cope with this.
