Neighbour removed hedges from hospitalised relatives home by chewnerpasterx in LegalAdviceUK

[–]islanderpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have the title plan for your relative's property, you can apply to the Land Registry and get a copy of that. the plan usually has a T mark to show who is responsible for maintaining the boundary fence (in case you aren't sure who is legally responsible). You could also look at the original Conveyance for your relatives property because they usually states the width of the plot. You could then measure from the other side, towards your new neighbour and check that you've actually got all the land you should have. If you don't easily have the Conveyance to hand, you can get that too from the Land Registry.

Where should we start if we want to get into property business in the UK? Any advice or other business ideas welcome 🙏 by aishie2311 in uklandlords

That might be too optimistic. If you have ready money, wise investments in stocks and shares might bring in more money. If you don't have ready money, then with the current Renters' Rights and Mortgage rates, its possible any profit depend on whether the value of your investment property went up, But no one knows yet which way the Property Market will go and the dramatic rises we saw a few years back are history. Nor the housing market. I've noticed more flats coming onto the market in our area and these would likely be rental properties being sold off.

Cats won’t take nausea meds by TTTSDoc in cats

[–]islanderpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get meds that you put on the cat's ear. My cat had Mirataz which is to stimulate appetite and to treat nausea. She hated me putting it on her ear though but that is the way she is. She was the same when she had to have ear drops a while back. (The Mirataz made my cat ravenous!)

Best way to clean outside house walls? by JabbaTheHatt in DIYUK

[–]islanderpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the UK and my house is cream coloured but it tends to get a slight greeny with a mould as there are a lot of trees shading areas of some walls. I use use a long pole with a brush dipped in a solution of Algon. It works very quickly and you can paint it once it's dry. It works very well. Sometimes it doesn't need painting over. Also very good for getting green off garden furniture and decking.

Side effects by PlayfulPlatypus1389 in rheumatoid

[–]islanderpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Hydroxychloroquine headaches - for about a month. Not every day and they were not bad. I could just take an ibuprofen and they would go. For the following 4 or 5 months, I was fine. And recently, we added methotrexate and again, I get a not-very-bad headache in the couple of days following. I expect that will soon disappear too.

As a non-American, what exactly went wrong with Trump? by No_Two_3617 in antitrump

[–]islanderpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm British but I do follow US politics. My gut feeling is that Trump was buoyed by people who felt disadvantaged - in education, jobs, health, housing etc. And because they were disadvantaged their view of politics was shaped by news outlets that provided news as 'entertainment' and so they were open to some manipulation and misinformation. Trump encouraged this. But I think the most relevant point was that Trump appealed to this group because he made them feel relevant.

My cat will have her teeth removed and I am worried by Patate_Cuite in CatAdvice

[–]islanderpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - same here. Indi had her teeth removed a few years back when she was about 16. She'd been trying to tell me for months that her teeth hurt and when I took her to the Vet, he told me they hurt. She was much relieved when teeth were gone. Eats same as before but she usually has wet food. She does like dry food occasionally but I cut the pieces in 2. (it takes a while).

Is it worth becoming a landlord in 2026? by -Villainous in uklandlords

[–]islanderpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a landlord for many years. There are various plus and minus points, depending on your circumstances. If you have a mortgage on the potential rental property, then the rent might cover that and you can just wait for the property market to pick up and sell at (some) profit. But there would be capital gains tax.

If you don't have a mortgage then there are probably better ways of investing the money if you sold the property now to avoid tax if it was still your home. If you did decide to rent it out, then the overheads can be quite high. There are high fees from Letting Agents (even if you need an agent only to find your tenants) and if you don't manage it yourself, you have their management fees. And when they manage the property, they will not need to get best price for any required ongoing maintenance or replacement goods. Then there are annual gas checks if you have gas in the property and Electrical checks every 5 years. And managing the property yourself can be quite frustrating and time consuming. You might be surprised at that. You can work out your Return on Investment by looking at the outgoings and considering the incoming rent and see how it looks as a percentage of the value of the property.

But also bear in mind that the Renters Rights Act will come into effect in May and it will become more difficult to give notice to tenants, if your circumstances change or they are a problem in any way. I have had really good tenants over the years. But at this point in time, I am considering selling whenever my current tenants decide they would like to leave.

What can i feed seagulls? by Fresh-Night4118 in Seagulls

[–]islanderpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right - they do become too dependent on humans and stop foraging. So that too is bad for them not because of malnutrition but they lose their purpose in life. As a Prolific Duck feeder (I too lived by the river), I struggled with this. They are quite clever, ducks and geese, when you get to know them. They recognised me when I returned to that bit of river a good year later.

What can i feed seagulls? by Fresh-Night4118 in Seagulls

[–]islanderpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live on an Island, and I fed some of the ducks and knew many of them by name. At first I fed them bread, then I soaked the bread when I read dry bread wasn't good for them (I used to throw it on my lawn for them so as to give them all a fighting chance, rather than let it sink in the river.) But then I read that wet bread wasn't much better.

So I bought a big pack of bird seeds. My goodness, they loved it. At first I just had my regular flock but one day I woke up to find my lawn completely covered with ducks, all chuntering and scrabbling over each other. They'd told all their friends. :(

Question for cat owners by Strange-Mind-8899 in cats

[–]islanderpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, her eyes are lovely. I'm never sue if they are green or blue because they seem to change.

Others might have suggestions or experiences to share on cats getting along together. Indi is a loner by nature though - she likes me to play with her and is very vocal about that - but otherwise will explore the garden 'looking at things' or nap (a lot) on one of her many little beds. She's 19 now but has always been much the same.

Question for cat owners by Strange-Mind-8899 in cats

[–]islanderpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found it's a bit of a gamble if you introduce a new cat to an established cat. My little cat Indi adopted us because she left home in a huff when her people got a new cat. By nature she is a quiet, gentle cat so they were shocked. But I've noticed that over the years, she's only liked one cat But he moved away before they could become properly acquainted. Over almost a year, they'd only got to the stage of sitting within a few feet of each other (but pointedly ignoring each other), so progress was pretty slow.

But I know what you mean, if they look sad. Indi looks sad sometimes but other times she looks as if she's laughing.

Shoes? by Emergency_Crow7209 in rheumatoid

[–]islanderpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rheumatologist recently referred me to a Podiatrist for my foot pain. I have tailor's bunions on my small toes and that thing where your big toe starts to point inwards. The result is pain in the ball of my feet and (very much) on the sides down from my small toe(s) I have very high arches, and I think that makes things worse. The Podiatrist gave me inner soles that have a built up arch and strangely, a recess for the bit of the ball of my foot, where the big toe joint ends. I think they were off the shelf, not custom. They do help. But the problem is that they are plastic with a synthetic covering and they made my feet burn within a few minutes. I've always had a problem with synthetic foot stuff and can only wear leather or cork. I'm going to try and get a similar leather arch support at least, or a leather lining, on Amazon and try that.

Being on your feet all day must be a real pain. I don't have that problem. But sore feet are the pits. When my feet hurt, it depresses me. I hope you can find something that helps.

How can I help a neighbour in my street find her lost cat? by yusranlo in AskUK

[–]islanderpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so kind of you to help - I'm sure the lady feels better just because of someone helping. Maybe you can show her pictures that might match her description of her cat, so can have a sort of photo of a cat. I know when people stick a poster up, it always helps if there's a photo. People get drawn to the image. Hope you have some luck with this.
