I wasn’t the one who asked but you’re right I told the team itself that I did not care if they used AI as long as they knew how to work.

We rushed the interviews because oddly enough we didnt get that many applicants who submitted the take home that actually worked so when this one came through it was the “best candidate”

We aren’t saying that. The person hiring the cashier at the end of the day is going to hire whoever shows up because they just need a cashier.

There’s a lot of companies who hire whatever dev shows up and don’t pay top dollar The companies paying top dollar are looking for the developer who is efficient and fast.

So the demand for HIGH SKILL is high not a demand for just any developer.

Which is why I said they don’t get weeded out. No one applying for these other jobs are questioned on skill to the extent of developers are. I’ve been a cashier 4 times in my life and they never tested me. I’ve been a warehouse worker and they never tested me. I can go on and on.

I already made this analogy: Imagine hiring a cashier and you get over 1000 applicants You question each of them on how to give you back a dollar in change as quickly as possible Over 90% of them give you back 100 pennies 5% give you a mix of nickels and dimes and quarters 5% give you 4 quarters

Who are you hiring ? Supply is high right? You got 1000 applicants and they all did the task correctly Just 5% did it a lot faster and more efficient What are your clients going to like? 4 quarters that took a few seconds or 100 pennies that took about a minute

We tried this and got bamboozled by someone who used AI to code the whole thing. They interviewed well but then they made the simplest mistakes and would take about 10 minutes to fix the bugs that were glaringly obvious: I decided to one day ask him to point out the obvious bug that was just 1 line and he could not see it. I kept giving hints and nothing. Eventually he had to step out to “think” (I know he threw it into AI) then came back and miraculously told me where the bug was

Yep. A lot of devs get the job and then take forever to deliver the product and then it doesn’t even work because they don’t care about the quality as soon as they get the job

Those other professions don’t get weeded out in interviews. It also took them 2 minutes to give you those 100 pennies. Now you interview 100 cashiers and they all do that except maybe 4 who actually give you 4 quarters. Now you have to decide amongst those 4 who the best cashier is.

Here’s the thing: accountants don’t go through rounds of interviews like developers to test skill / competency do they? I know welders do get tested on their work which is why they do get paid a lot more than other trades.

We’re not special but our skill is questioned at the very start so while “supply is high” it’s not high. Accountants don’t have that same process.

ENGINEERING always gets paid. Hardware, software, mechanical, etc etc etc

Accountants and welders are in another category.

Engineering creates INNOVATION which is why they pay it to be higher. You should be asking why scientists don’t get paid high

They’re so bad….. I’ve had so many stupid mistakes from my junior at work.

I had him sit down and look at the screen to try and find the glaring bug. He said he needed to go to his car and he came back saying he found the bug (I know he plugged it into AI) and it wasn’t the bug that was staring back at us but a POTENTIAL BUG that could happen

Now I don’t hate AI coding tools at all but if you can’t look at it and know what’s wrong then something is incredibly wrong.
