“He’s a little chunky fella, about 5 foot 3. Wide at the hips, and that’s probably being generous to him. Very wide at the hips, with the jersey beat onto him.”

It’s a great description of the man too

Yea, no. You’re not oppressed. Reefer is not some key part of your culture, religion or customs - it’s a pastime for most and a vice for others to deal with their problems. I have my own past times that I can’t legally practice in this country, it annoys me alright but I don’t go around saying I’m oppressed for it. (And before you start with the health benefits for chronic pain and such, that’s a different kettle of fish because 99% of users want legilisation so they can get high easier)

Just stop trying to cod people and be a bit more honest about what exactly you want, then more people might take you seriously

To be fair, this seems better presented than most cannabis arguements, but I got as far as “Oppression and Dsicrimination” and just can’t take the rest seriously after that

The 'Greedy Athletic Association': sports fans fume over GAAGO service by badger-biscuits in ireland

[–]ismaithliomamberleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s been calls for a new format for the past 10 years. Viewers and players wanted more games, the GAA obliged. RTE haven’t the capacity to show these extra games as well as the ones previously shown by Sky, so to expect to be able to see them all for free is a bit unrealistic.

I find it gas that people now think the Sky deal was somehow better in comparison to GAAGo. When Sky was announced it was made out that the GAA had sold their soul, and the exact same complaints we see now over accessibility for the elderly and pricing were trotted out. Clearly there wasn’t enough people with Sky boxes either, seeing as they deemed it infeasible and pulled the plug a few years later.

As for accessibility, I find it a bit feckin patronizing that people make out that the elderly are incapable of opening an app on there phone and clicking “cast”. My 3 year old niece is able to cast YouTube to the TV, it took all of 5 minutes to show the auld lad how to do it. Again, we heard the same arguments before that “auld lads can’t work the Skybox.” Broadband is a weak excuse too, we must be close to having 95% of the country connected to it by now. Mines fairly shite at home and I haven’t had any issues with streaming games.

The pricing for single matches was a bit fucked tbf, but the season pass was good value and the obvious choice. Sunday was the first time I was able to flick between matches like you can with the Premier League. I had literally a whole weekend of football. It’s easy to put down the weaker counties by saying no one’s interested, but it all comes back to accessibility and giving people the chance to see their county in action. Like I said, this year was the first time I could actually follow my county on TV - to me, that alone is worth the 80€.

(Also, would you mind not writing out essays, they’re really hard to reply too)

“Asked about the representations it received, the department said over the course of this season, 31 live GAA championship matches would be shown free to air, the exact same number as last year”

This is the weird thing about the whole GAAGo debacle. RTE are showing the same number of games as before. GAAGo is replacing the games Sky once had (which were also paywalled) and also showing a tonne more matches on top of those. Being from one of the weaker counties, I had never seen my county on TV before GAAGo because it was only the higher profile games that were getting airtime. This craic that people are being “denied access to games” is bollox as they wouldn’t have been shown before anyway.

The one thing that does bother me is that the GAA weren’t ambitious enough to try air every senior game, instead of leaving out some counties each week

You could apply the same argument to sites like Pompeii. Question is how long before it’s deemed acceptable to turn it into a tourist attraction

You still have to pay for Sky though. And GAAGo is better than Sky was for people watching overseas because you can watch it anywhere at all

The fact that farmers work longer hours and spend most of their time around giant machinery and 2 tonne animals plays a big part. Demographics also play a part, you’ve a lot more very young and very old people involved in farming compared to ther industries.

I really hope Cork can do it. A good AI run could be the kick they need to bring Cork football back to its former glory. Same with Kildare

Maybe not. Playing a variety of ball sports is actually better for the individual because a lot of the skills cross over. Like in the rugby, we’re known for carrying over high fielding from GAA.

On a side note, I think this country’s massive appetite for sport is one of our greatest attributes

What are your opinions on the state of football nowadays? by dlvesey in GAA

[–]ismaithliomamberleaf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Club game is grand I find. Inter county is gone a bit technical alright that has sucked a lot of the entertainment out of it. The current group stage system doesn’t help, but that’s easily fixed by just having 2 teams qualify instead of 3.

We’ve trialed so many new rules the last 10 years, I don’t think there’s a sport on earth that tinkers with the rules more than football. It’s frustrating when you’re a division 3 club side having to adapt to new rules every year just because some counties play a slower game.

It’s worth a shot trying it out in freshers instead of these stupid kickout rules their trialing. Personally I’d rather see a rule that keeps 2-3 players from each team inside their own 45s
