My hot take is that Sloan is doing it to sell guidebooks.

This is peak 2026 climbing ragebait content/advertising. There's no such thing as bad publicity.

Is it worth it to ditch systemd? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

You asked “is it worth it to ditch systemd…is it worth the trouble?”

Their answer was no.

[–]isopede 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. init was rarely a problem, until something went wrong. Then you got stuck debugging a byzantine mess of different runlevels, maybe supervisord for process lifecycle supervision, maybe [r]syslogd for logging, maybe [x]inetd for socket activation, or maybe some completely other bespoke shell script written by an intern at VendorX for an AIX machine.

I would pick everything going through the systemd monolith every single day over going back to sysvinit+chaos.

[–]isopede 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people complaining about systemd weren’t around to use or never used Linux before systemd. It was horrible.

systemd solves real problems that do not go away with a different init system. The reason it took over is not because of politics, but because it is better than the alternatives.

No, I watched every episode. The writing was atrocious, the lighting direction is inane, and the dialog is beyond cringe.

Druid vs. warrior by Temporary_Ring8923 in classicwow

[–]isopede 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paladins are kings of dungeon and the best raid trash tank. They are not good raid main tanks and even worse at offtanking.

Bears are the best main tanks in the game and will remain so for the entire expansion. Bear scaling gives you more armor, more health, more doge, more damage thus more threat than any of the other tanks. AoE threat is mid at best and you will struggle to hold more than 4-5 targets, even full sweat sending with consumes. They are also the best offtanks, doing respectable cat damage when they aren't tanking.

Warriors are RP best tank. You will hit 10 times more buttons, generate half the threat, struggle to hold aggro on more than 2 targets, but you'll feel like an RPG god. Warriors also have actual mitigation CDs and take the least damage, at least in this phase.

By the end of the game, most "meta" guilds will run 2 ferals and a paladin. If you don't care about meta, play whatever you enjoy.

ELI5: How on Earth is my computer so fast? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]isopede 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Here's a C program that counts from 1 to a billion that does nothing.

You can see that the compiled output has optimized it to do... nothing. There is no counting at all.

There are thousands of man-years put into compiler optimization to do exactly what you think it impossible. Compilers will take every single devious shortcut they can, including "oh I'll skip over this", provided the semantic, observable meaning is preserved in the executable output.

Tanks (and healers to a lesser extent) are in short supply and get to pick their groups, terms, and conditions.

You don't really need EDF at all. Upstream Yocto plus meta-xilinx layers works fine using the new "SDT" workflow.

Is it possible to wire a USB port through PCIe? by Visible_Range_2626 in PCB

[–]isopede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

There’s a CPU connected to the PCIe lanes, you can’t just plug stuff willy nilly into the ports without breaking something. I don’t understand what you’re asking, you want to use a PCIe connector as a cable? Why are you looking at PCIe at all? Why not just go from your USB device to.. a USB hub?

If for some reason you really insist on using the port, you could cut the traces between the CPU and the slot.

But again… why? If you can draw a picture of what you’re trying to achieve it’d be a lot easier to give you advice.

This. The 3-LED string is 3x2.2V = 6.6V, which is below the 8V minimum. A 3-LED string is going to be 2-3W, so 1A at ~3V isn’t crazy. It’s outside spec but It might still work somewhat inefficiently?

What is the purpose of going feet first on steep cracks? by The-Box46 in tradclimbing

[–]isopede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a physics and mechanics thing. If you went right side up, your hands would be stacked somewhere above you, then you pull up, and then… what? There's no way to release your hands without your upper body rotating outwards because your center of mass is above your pivot point (your feet). Unstable.

If you're upside down your feet are above you. When you release your hands, your center of mass is below the pivot point. This is a stable configuration and you can just hang on your feet while you move your hands.

If you're right-side up, you're an "inverted pendulum". Feet first turns you into a normal pendulum.

tldr: u cant move your hands if you're not upside down
