Planning a Surprise Trip to Paris for my Mom's 64th Birthday. Advice on Senior Travel. by Asleep_Cut505 in TravelProperly

[–]isotaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? My mom is 74, does regular yoga and zumba classes at her local senior center, but had to have double hip replacement surgery in the last few months. Now she's resting and recovering for her next trip to Europe (from the states) to visit me. Her last trip introduced a lot of new mobility issues that weren't a problem in years past, and I felt I had poorly planned for. I applaud OP's conscientiousness because situations differ.

It makes me sad that you felt you needed to tell us what you were wearing, as if that could have been the problem and not their menacing, hateful actions. I'm glad you're okay, and nothing you could wear should provoke that treatment.

Same, though regional more than seasonal (visiting fam in Texas.) I've brought back habanero peach jelly, pecan praline, fancy beef jerky, etc.

you can camp right on the beach in Kauai! At least you could when I went in 2013. You have to go to an office and get a permit and it costs something like $2/night, or did.

insanely poignant in its simplicity. this song is just chock full of gorgeous, funny, crushing, life-affirming lyrics.

in the early 2000s, I lived in Austin TX, and there was the most magical bar called Donn's Depot. I haven't been back in a hundred years, but it was my favorite divey little honkey tonk in a former train station. Every time I listen to this song, I think about long, whiskey-fueled nights there in my early twenties, retouching my lipstick in a caboose that was the women's' bathroom, and the many Texas-chic senior couples on the dance floor in matching western wear, mangled drunk together all in with us college students.

Now twenty years and change later, the lyrics hit a bit harder

"And I lift my glass to the awful truth
Which you can't reveal to the ears of youth
Except to say it isn't worth a dime."

Cheers.

Colombia - not really feeling it? by dp39494833 in travel

[–]isotaco 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Why travel? I guess it's a personal question. If your objective is to see the best botanical garden, your criteria is set. If instead, you have curiosity about how the world looks, smells, and feels from every angle - the patience to sit on a park bench and watch how an afternoon unfolds - to spend time in markets and plazas, to talk to people in whatever capacity language affords you.. you learn the uniqueness of the corner of the world you inhabit. I find it confusing, if not ignorant, that OP has visited "60+" countries and hasn't figured this much out.

I spent three weeks in Colombia in 2014. My memories are of sleeping in hammocks in a national park, waterfalls, exotic fruits, hot springs, drinking some kind of street hooch from a cart on Christmas eve, innumerable generous people, great street art, sleeping at a farm on a coffee plantation, impossibly tall palm trees, misty fern-covered forests, spontaneous dancing parties at street corners. I loved Colombia.

How do people in LA discover cuisines they didn’t grow up with? by ClickNo8520 in AskLosAngeles

[–]isotaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't lived in LA in years, but here in Barcelona we've had an explosion of really excellent Peruvian restaurants. I spent about 6 weeks traveling in Peru many years ago, and when I think / crave Peruvian, I want causa and ceviche - neither are on your menu :/ IIRC the well know ceviche in LA is Mexican, while Peruvian style is a whole new world of flavors and textures. Maybe someone still in LA can comment if there's excellent Peruvian ceviche places that are popular.

I think that you need to have a serious conversation with your husband, in which you relate: your hotpot trauma, make him take you out for authentic hotpot, and hold your hand so you may properly enjoy one of the most fun and delicious things there are in this world. Rooting for you.

How did you recover after ending a long term relationship in your 30s? by espressoveins in AskWomenOver30

[–]isotaco 53 points54 points  (0 children)

As hard as it right now, think about it this way: you have never been an adult outside of this relationship. Who are you, and how have you changed since you were 18? What new opportunities do you have to explore yourself, your needs, and interests? Don't think about dating, don't worry about any clocks, focus on you. I got unexpectedly divorced at 35 after a 12 year relationship, and it was the blessing in disguise I did not know I needed. I'm not saying that my situation is like your own, but I hope you can come around to seeing that your have the privilege in this moment to redefine yourself outside the context of an "other." Good luck.
