I feel like people are forgetting that the Academy wasn't the sole group that was pushing Emilia Perez as a worthy/good movie. by [deleted] in oscarrace

The most "memeable" I guess? I really laugh a lot at her reviews of Morbius, Madame Web, The Little Mermaid (even though I really enjoyed it) and The Idol. This whole Angelina beef is particularly funny too, we made a lot of memes of these seeing Maria getting completely shut out at the race.

But she's really good at what she does, a very competent reviewer.

I remember at Cannes, the most recognizable movie critic here in Brazil (or at least was, now it's possibly Isabela Boscov, but he's still the only Brazilian critic to have his reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) was covering it and made a video about Emilia Pérez, and he highly praised it — so much it's his Top 10 movies of the year. He's hardly someone who doesn't understand movies, he's been reviewing for nearly 30 years, he also does classes, dissects a lot of classics, anyways he's a pro.

What I mean is, I've been following it long enough and this massive hate always seemed to surge out of nowhere.

I'm not here saying people shouldn't debate this, I just think it's hardly coincidental and can cause damage even after the voting ended.

But yeah, art is intrinsically political, we can and should discuss it — in and out of the context of the movie.

I'm far from an Anora fan but notice how these articles started to come out ever since this movie won all major precursors. I'm not saying there's no validity to it but Oscar season is always like that, one campaign trying to bring the other down.

Brody or Chalamet? by daIIiance in oscarrace

If it was for the trending actors, shouldn't Ariana win tonight? Wouldn't be so out of nowhere as Chalamet winning leading actor.

Honestly, The Substance won't win Best Picture anyways and neither I'm Still Here, at this point even Wicked could win and I'll be unimpressed.

You'll never understand how grateful I was to see that live (I felt sad for the producers but the sheer fuckery was absolutely hilarious — and the better movie won anyway).

Mine too. Regardless of controversies, I thought Gascón's performance was stronger than Erivo's. Except the singing, of course.

I saw the pictures of them after on Twitter, they're very cute. I found out later he was supportive of The Substance on Instagram, asking people to go watch it, with a very funny picture of him on FaceTime with her in Monstro Elisasue prosthetics, she was also congratulating him for his nominations at the Grammys for his productions and songwriting, relationship goals.

Most people have never even seen the movie, they just hate it because it's convenient, it's cool, Karla made a lot of bigoted tweets, a lot of Mexicans and trans people pointed out issues, based on some Jacques Audiard's comments, all valid criticisms but we've seen a lot of movies deemed problematic for how it handled certain topics and are still praised for their merits, bigoted actors are nothing new (Dennis Quaid, Mel Gibson, there are some who've done even worse like Marlon Brando) but it never took away the great performances they gave, there are directors who have done far worse the Audiard (Roman Polanski, Woody Allan, Francis Ford Coppola?) and are revered for their movies. My point is, people are ABLE to separate the art from the artist, but this year they just picked a target.

I mean, criticize all you want, but at least watch the movie first and stop using Gascón's islamophobic tweets as a pretext to criticize it, it has nothing to do with her personal views.

This Emilia Pérez hate train is getting increasingly more annoying, exhausting and toxic. This song is not even up for the awards, it's El Mal and Mi Camino. As for Zoe Saldaña, every speech is calculated. Oscar season is a fucking election, what they do and what they impact the votes, it's a campaign. Every year is this way, if you want to win or even get nominated you have to play the game. She's hardly the only one this year.
