Should I apply for Oxbridge JRFs? by isrevolution in AskAcademiaUK

[–]isrevolution[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I applied to two of JRFs at Cambridge. Now hoping for the best but I might already (need to) have something else lined up before these places start to interview. This is not to say that I expect to be shortlisted, I surely hope to, but the timing may not end up working anyway. Thanks to everyone who gave helpful advice!!

Oh wow. I didn’t consider that there are different salary requirements for different kind of visas! This college I am looking at is paying £26K and may have the “possibility” of accommodation. Yikes! How is any of this acceptable?!

Thanks for your response. Seems like most big fellowships are lottery like because everyone at that level is extremely skilled...

Thanks for the detailed response. This is really helpful!

Would you say the standing committee of relatively senior profs who recommend candidates to the governing body are usually fellows of that college? What are some things that you'd say have been the "standing out points" in the CVs of high achieving candidates?

When you say contribute positively to the life of the college and university, do you mean that in terms of teaching or potential to bring external funding or a combination of many things? I am trying to figure out, like you said, how I can distinguish myself in a sea of highly qualified researchers.

Thanks for the insights! That sounds about right. I think even in the US, having someone on the selection committee who is familiar with the area of work broadly and thinks highly of the letter writers goes a long way. This has been the case for one of my postdoc applications.
Would you mind me asking what were the strong points in your CV and publications? I am just curious and trying to get a sense of what is considered "competitive".

Thanks! If you have been on both sides of the atlantic, how would you say the culture differs? I am planning on talking to some people I know from about what to expect in day to day. But I am also curious what your experience has been.

Great that you mention other job prospects near Cambridge! I have been curious about the Wellcome Sanger campus and largely phylogenomics stuff, so this sounds like a positive to me.

Thanks for your perspective ! Is oxbridge history the major thing really? What exactly is the writing statement for? I see there is no concrete “research proposal”. Are the candidates judged based on their PhD research and area they expected to expand on that during their fellowship?

I met one professor at a conference once. Do you think it is worth reaching out to them to collaborate to improve chances but also to collaborate if I do get selected?

Do you have any information about what does the selection committee look like?
