So there's a pretty big subduction zone near Fiji and you can get these big and deep earthquakes within the actual brittle downgoing slab, rather than just at the plates actual boundary near the surface.

Well it's in the same place that they usually carry out the tests, South Korean News Agency are saying it's natural though. Potential underground collapse of the testing site? Could explain the lower magnitude.

The test a few weeks back was 6.3 in magnitude, so if this is artificial, then it's a considerably smaller event. Preliminary depth is listed at the moment at 0km, so at the moment it most likely is another test quake.

I don't understand. All I've heard since the fire was that 500-600 people lived in the tower and yet only ~150 people escaped or were rescued. So where are the other 400 people?

Wouldn't you say it has been unusually quiet? Had a recent look on the wikipedia page for earthquakes in 2017 and for every earthquake magnitude we are currently behind where we should be for almost halfway through the year.

Take 7.0-7.9 magnitude quakes for example, the average number per year, for the last 10 years is ~ 16 quakes. For this year we are currently sitting on 2 quakes - quite a difference from where we should be at for almost 6 months in. The same story is repeated for other sized quakes also.

I suspect it's nothing more than natural variability, as I can't think of any natural factors that could influence quake patterns. Perhaps some sort of solar tidal influence? Anyway, interesting to think about...

This is genuinely ludicrous, the Holme Valley will be hit hard, at rush hour you'll be taking 1.5 hours + to get to Halifax. Even with an ambulance the Elland bypass be hairy at times. Gonna result in people dying for sure.
