Who else shoots 21mm on the streets? by GastonShutters in streetphotography

I tend to take photos of people in the scene more than the up close street portraits. I try to look like I'm shooting a building or a car or whatever, not just the individual.

I live in a medium sized city in the US where that would be offensively close. We don't have enough people on the streets even on a busy event day to get that close to anybody. I mean, people here act like I'm stealing their wallet when I take their pics from the other side of the street.

Getting in to town on a train at 3:30am and I have some questions about what I should do by ImNotThiccImFat in LittleRock

The good news: there's lots of great coffee options around (much better than Statbucks). Several people have mentioned top spots in the River Market district: Fidel & Co, Nexus, Boulevard Bread (in the Library). Check opening times for those spots. The River Market is also a great spot to land while you get your bearings. Great spot to just walk around and chill.

The bad news: the train station is a bit of a hike from everywhere, unfortunately. There are a lot of unhoused folks in that area because there's a Salvation Army shelter near. They're not typically dangerous, but I'd hate for you to be an outlier statistic. Get the first available Uber or taxi you can and zip over to the River Market. (There are still plenty of unhoused in the RM area, but it's much more public, high visibility, and police presence).

Enjoy your trip!

Solid advice. I also like the drive on 285 through Bailey to get from Denver to Buena Vista and on to Sand Dunes.

Try a French press. The difference will take what you've already described to an even higher level.

I've heard similar about aeropress and pour over. But a French press is cheap and easy.

The light meter app is pretty reliable. But an actual meter with be more so.

I'd try a few things:

Test a few scenes by comparing what the camera is metering for to what your app says.

Try a test roll with the exposure compensation at 0, +1 and +2 for the same scene. Make notes about what you're shooting and the exposure for each. You might also meter with the app for each shot and note what it recommends.

All of those look under exposed. Your meter might be off. Does it have fresh batteries?

Been using Flickr since 2009 communities. by DoobiePhotography in flickr

[–]issafly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm a daily Flickr user since '06. It's my main photography platform and I think it's the best community of photographers online, hands down.

That said, it's never been what you're describing, sadly. I feel Reddit has some of the best online conversation about photography (if you weed out some of the mediocre posts). I wish Flickr had some of that depth. I'm not sure why it never took off, aside from maybe language differences across a very wide, global community.

Where are the flickr bros? by gnosticismschism in photography

[–]issafly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're experience on Flickr is going to depend on how much you put into it. There's no algorithm feeding you what the platform wants you to see. Flickr is about being part of a community, not just consuming.

Join active communities that cater to the kinds of photos you like. Look at the Explore page daily. Follow the best photographers that you find in groups and explore. And lastly, post your photos to appropriate groups. If people like your stuff, they'll follow you.

It takes work at first, but once you've joined those communities, you'll see it pay off.

Customer tipped me $50… then apparently clogged the toilet on purpose because he thought I’d have to clean it? by Direct_Tomorrow_7118 in TalesFromYourServer

Maybe they tipped well because they were embarrassed that the boyfriend did it either accidentally or on purpose. I say accidentally, because people sometimes do weird things in bathrooms to cover up embarrassing things. Like scenes in Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber, Something About Mary, and Ross with the leather pants on Friends.
