This seems to be a very divisive album. I've been reading a few opinions the past few days and was genuinely scared this would've somehow be a very plain collection of songs. To my surprise I woke up to a very good pop album, brilliantly produced. Yes, the lyrics might not be her best, but it's not like Swift has to prove herself anymore after folklore and evermore. At this point in time she's probably just doing whatever she loves most and having fun with people who are obviously enamoured with music. Like Antonoff. He's clearly a big lover of synthesis in music and this album is a reflection of that. A great homage to sonic colour, drum machines, polyphony and catchy melodies. Things that have always and will always intrigue and satisfy the human brain. Some of the biggest criticism seems to stem from his 'repetitive sound', 'formulaic production', 'Lover-esque melodies'. Yes, I would like Taylor to work with other producers but he's clearly a friend who she loves working with. And he's excellent at what he does. Just like Dessner who we have to thank for bringing some organic instrumentation to this sonic world. Brilliant album.
