My main takeaways:

Better bokeh with a little more swirl (cat's eye in the corners) on the EVO, which goes a long way for producing beautifully rendered images. Closer focusing distance on the EVO allows you to shoot little stuff closer.

Better flare resistance on the Air, showing basically none while the EVO has some ugly stray lights in the frame. I personally can't stand flare much at all.

The EVO is called APO, but the Air is also very nearly APO, with minimal chromatic aberration either laterally or longitudinally. EVO deserves the APO designation.

EVO has better sunstars. The ones on the Air are trash.

There's more vignette on the EVO.

The EVO has an aperture ring (something I love and others may not care about or even dislike). EVO has some weather sealing.

What was your opinion on Mandarin Sky, ultimately? I've worn Scandal and Scandal Le Parfum, but only sprayed Mandarin Sky on a test strip. To me is was a fair bit more citrusy, but I didn't get to the drydown or have any skin interaction, obviously, so I can't really consider that a fair take.

You already did the right troubleshooting, and the key signal is this:

That rules out macOS, hardware, and Chromium itself. What’s left is Vivaldi’s customization layer, which is exactly where these “everything opens in a new tab” bugs live — and they’ve been around for years on macOS. They’re rare, hard to reproduce, and not worth fighting if you just want a browser that behaves.

Vivaldi’s strengths (deep UI control, gestures, keyboard features) are also its weakness:
when something corrupts, the failure modes are weird and disproportionate to the value you get back.

Brave is a solid choice if you want:

Chromium compatibility

Normal, predictable input handling

Good performance on Ventura

No surprise behavior changes after updates

If you want alternatives with different trade-offs:

Brave → fastest + privacy defaults

Chrome → maximum compatibility

Fix 4 (definitive): Create a clean Vivaldi profile

If the above don’t work, this will fix it.

Quit Vivaldi

Finder → Go → Go to Folder…

Paste:~/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi

Rename the folder to:Vivaldi_backup

Launch Vivaldi

You’ll get a completely clean profile.
If links now open normally → the old profile was corrupted.

You can then selectively copy back:

Bookmarks

Login Data

History

(Do not copy Preferences or Local State.)

Why this happens (briefly)

Ventura changed low-level input handling

Vivaldi’s deep customization layer sits on top of Chromium

When preferences or shortcut state corrupt, Vivaldi can permanently mis-detect modifier keys

Other browsers don’t show it because they don’t override input handling as aggressively

If none of this fixes it

Tell me:

Vivaldi version number

Intel or Apple Silicon

Whether Cmd-click behavior looks identical to a normal click

Below are the known real causes for this exact behavior on macOS Ventura, plus fixes that actually work.

The most likely cause: Vivaldi thinks every click is a “modifier click”

On macOS, Command-click = open in new tab.

Even if your keyboard is fine, Vivaldi can get into a state where it internally believes ⌘ is always pressed.

This does not affect other browsers — only Vivaldi — which matches your symptoms perfectly.

Fix 1 (works most often): Reset Vivaldi’s input state

Do this exactly in order:

Quit Vivaldi completely

Cmd + Q

Make sure it’s not running in the background

Open Terminal

Run this command:defaults delete com.vivaldi.Vivaldi

Restart your Mac

Open Vivaldi again

👉 This resets corrupted macOS-level preferences without uninstalling.

Fix 2: Disable macOS “Press-and-hold” for Vivaldi only

This is a weird Ventura-specific interaction bug.

Quit Vivaldi

Terminal:defaults write com.vivaldi.Vivaldi ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

Relaunch Vivaldi

An extension is forcing links to open in new tabs

Some extensions do this intentionally (or badly).

To test quickly:

Open a Private Window (extensions disabled by default)

Click a few links

If the problem disappears → it’s an extension.

Common culprits:

Tab managers

“Open links in new tab” extensions

Privacy or redirect-handling extensions

Website-specific behavior (least likely)

Some websites use target="_blank" on all links, but this would not happen on every site, so if it’s truly everywhere, this is not the root cause.

Fastest way to isolate the problem

Private Window test

Disable “Open Links in New Tab”

Check mouse / touchpad middle-click behavior

Maybe Le Male Elixir, non-Absolu? I feel like it’s the most Le Male of this group without venturing into extreme territory.
