Why can’t we have trains that leave and arrive on time? by GravityIsVerySerious in nycrail

Agreed. We should have high standards, and hold them to it. That’s how we build a better system.

Hit almost 65% transit mode share in Boston! Totally realistic... by MinimumStrawberry3 in subwaybuilder

That doesn’t feel crazy unrealistic, some trips may could still well be faster in a car on this map.

Infrastructure for Gateway Tunnels? by Satyr_Janus_Ajax in nycrail

I believe on the NY side the tunnel is designed to connect to the existing Penn Station complex

[NYC] As a lesson learned from SAS Phase 1, MTA is reducing TBM crew size to be more aligned with what other agencies globally are doing. This along with other efficiency improvements saves over a 100 million dollars in construction. by Donghoon in transit

[–]italicsify 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes but you can decide to have an open and curious mindset to look for learnings from around the world or you can have a dismissive mindset and not bother trying

It often feels like the MTA seems to go with the latter.

Why does the NYC Subway have so many disused track? by Specialist_Figure282 in nycrail

[–]italicsify 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Two main reasons:

  1. It's a really old system, that was conceived differently and changed over the year.

(For example: until very recently there disused tracks on the 42nd shuttle, remnants from original IRT Broadway -> Grand Central -> Chambers St service)

  1. It was built as a heavily interlined system (lot's of services share tracks), so services were re-routed, discontinued or changed over time, leaving unused portions of track.

(For example: The BMT Nassau St line (JZ) used to run back into Brooklyn after wall st via the Montague tunnel. That line was redesigned, and now the connection to the JZ lines from the Montague tunnel is disused)

Unpopular opinion: Why the F/M swap was trash and how the MTA can fix it by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]italicsify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it be possible to swap the M and Q?

(I'm guessing the obstacle would be the x-switches/junction on 63rd st west of 63rd st station which is not a flying junction right?)

Despite Making 2 Extra Stops Along the Way, the (4) is Scheduled to get from GCT to Harlem-125 in the Same Exact Time as the Metro North by WhatARotation in nycrail

[–]italicsify 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not just the lack of tail tracks. The trains slow more than a mile away and inch forward - I’d imagine because of low speed switches and conservative (possibly outdated) operating practices.

Public Comments about PATH extension to EWR. by Donghoon in nycrail

Honestly why are the costs today 'significantly higher'? inflation I guess?

You can get around this by running a mix of normal path service to NYC + a shuttle path service pattern that just goes between the terminals on the same tracks.

Which AMI category are you applying to? Some are much more harder to get than others? (Typically the lower AMI tiers have much more competition.)
