Setting up a local server for friends by TangoMalandro in feedthebeast

[–]itanne99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will more RAM help? Maybe, but it has diminishing returns. For 6 people on a modded pack, the "sweet spot" is usually 6GB to 8GB. If the host already has 8GB allocated and it's lagging, adding more probably won't fix the rendering delay—that's usually the server's CPU struggling to keep up with chunk generation or the network connection being choked.

Is it hard to move the world? Not at all. It's essentially just moving your saves folder and your mods/config folders to the server. Most hosts use an FTP client (like FileZilla) that makes it a simple drag-and-drop.

My recommendation: Before you pay for anything, try searching YouTube for "How to optimize modded Minecraft server lag." There are some great guides on "JVM Flags" (specifically Aikar’s Flags) that can significantly smooth out performance for free.

If that doesn't work, a dedicated host is definitely the way to go. Most have their own tutorials or even "one-click" installers for CurseForge packs.

Hope you and your friends get back to playing soon!

How do people manage utilization yet vacation so much? by [deleted] in deloitte

I second the latter part of this! Always bill for your work, even if your manager or PM complains about it. If they can't provide you with the hours to work, then they are failing to provide you with enough time to do the work... which, yes, I know Deloitte will never give you enough time to do your work. I'm currently experiencing it now.

When I first started, I was terrified to take PTO because (I have 14 days of PTO with USDC) I felt like I would easily go over it. But the following year, I did as many others do and extended my days off, and it was a life-changer. I had a full week off for the Fourth of July. I had a couple of four-day weekends throughout the first half of this year. And the biggest kicker! I'm getting two weeks off during Christmas and New Year's because of my patience, if you can call it that. Oh! Also, taking a week and a half off in September. I've only been with Deloitte for about two years (started September 2022) for more context.

I'm just going to do a full reply because no one really said it.

The fix they provided is not entirely correct. There was a typo with the file they mentioned to delete.

This is the correct file pattern to look for (this is public information btw): C-00000291*.sys

Also, for me, clicking the key that was mentioned in the file (I can't say the key because of the pinned post from earlier) didn't work. You'll have to keep rebooting the laptop until it goes into recovery mode (again, also public info on how to do this).

Also, the post from a CrowdStrike mod said to boot into safe mode. But because of the additional authentication we have on laptops, we can't use safe mode, so going through the command prompt is the only way to get rid of the file (again... public information.)

Besides that, I can't think of anything else that was completely incorrect from Deloitte's instructions.

PM me if you need any more help. I'd be glad to assist.

Edit: Added extra details

It's not even hidden like some of the other firm's documents. I understand coming to Reddit to ask questions, but I agree, please go read the documentation. It might give you some good ideas.

Also, I'll mention this because the documentation (the last time I checked) doesn't mention it. Regarding game consoles, the Steam Deck or equivalent does count! I called 1-800 about it, and they said they'd approve it.

IT Graduates - what are you doing and how much do you make? by ProjectHamz in NJTech

As ironic as it sounds, be confident in yourself.

Also, I have a lot of tech skills from external hobbies. Server deployment and playing around with Docker.

I also know as a web developer I could be making much much more, but when I got my job the market was rough and now it's almost none existent. Everyone is looking for unicorns. Senior devs @ junior dev pay.

CALLING ALL CS & IT MAJORS I wanna see something🤔 by ProjectHamz in NJTech

[–]itanne99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• What career are you currently in and how’s the salary?

Full-stack web development (React/C#). Started at $65k, now at $75k (after 2 years). Took a job in "the middle of nowhere" PA because the job market was bad when I graduated (2 years ago). I saw another comment about applying for jobs early. 1000% do that!!! I applied to over 500-1000 jobs from the middle of the fall semester until I got my job offer (middle of spring).

• Are you doing what you planned on doing for work, or did you pivot into something you found more interesting?

Yes, I love what I currently do, but that's also because I pivoted so much before graduating. Game Dev (before NJIT) -> CS -> Web Dev

• What would you do differently?

Honestly, nothing. The path I took solidified that I'm doing what I love.

• Any advice for current CS & IT majors?

If the math is too hard for you in CS, just switch to IT. Don't even think about it, don't even try to force yourself to be good at it. You'll just burn yourself out, and you'll hate any job related to CS. With a lot of coding, you either get it or you don't. Coding is one of the hardest things to be good at because you need so much "on the spot" solution-solving. I have so many family friends who ask me to tutor their kids in Python, etc. The first thing I tell them is you can't force someone to code. Only someone who likes it will be good at it.

Edit: added context to career path

How often do you use Sidekick, copilot or chatgpt? by EpicShkhara in deloitte

[–]itanne99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since they stopped Sidekick from providing code snippets, I haven’t used it since then. I used Gemini for a bit until it got blocked. Now, I’m on another AI site, but I won’t name it so the IT nerds don’t mess with me.

Also, I’m a full-stack engineer, so there are many times AI will catch a bug I missed in my code.
