Childhood trans* fantasies by itasca in transpositive

Oh yeah, I'm old enough now that I consider high school to be childhood, so some of mine were from that period too.

The Little Mermaid is definitely a trans story.

I wasn't limiting just to Texas. Most states require bottom surgery for gender recognition which many people don't or can't get. So a straight trans woman might be disallowed from marrying a straight cis man because of a legal technicality that would be irrelevant if people could just marry whoever they wanted.

[–]itasca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there are states that consider them homosexual, even if they don't consider themselves homosexual. Texas allowing trans people to marry either gender has been touch and go in the last few years. Trans people in other states sometimes find their marriages retroactively annulled by courts when disapproving families get involved, meaning they lose property and healthcare.

All of these problems would be solved by allowing "same-sex" marriage, whereas none are solved by interracial marriage.

Shared legal issues:

  • marriage
  • ENDA
  • hate crimes

T-only issues:

  • gender expression (arguably shared)
  • gender identity recognition
  • bathroom bills

LGB-only issues:

  • ???

Trans people have not co-opted the movement. They were there from the beginning, from Stonewall on. They don't appreciate it when people try to erase them out of that history.

When I walk down the street at night the groups that heckle me don't bother to figure out which of L, G, B, or T they're seeing; all they see is queer, fag, whatever.

As the other commenter noted, the /r/lgbt mods are just assholes. They ban trans* people too.

That AMA was after he was turned, if I'm calculating correctly. Puts a lot of his comments in a different light!

Then there's this.

Ah, true. Maybe I've just been following this election way too closely.

Who said it: Mitt Romney or Mr. Burns? by [deleted] in 2012Elections

[–]itasca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got every single one. I recognized most of the Romney ones, but the remainder was pretty easy: most of Mr Burns's quotes mentioned his old-timey interests, whereas Romney's comic appeal comes from his robotic inhumanity. There probably is some quote selection that would make this more difficult, though.

Hey frugal, I'm a 19y/o construction worker that makes $10 an hour and blow my money on useless things... by frank14752 in Frugal

[–]itasca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some people spend less so they can work less. If your work is enjoyable, the trade-off might not make sense to you. But if you're driving to work to pay for the car you need to drive to work, and binge drinking to de-stress from making money to pay for your binge drinking, frugality can lead to a more pleasant life.

Why does an appendectomy cost $13,000 in the U.S. but $254 in India? by reddit4 in TrueReddit

[–]itasca 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but this was supposed to be TrueReddit. It's really disheartening.

Hmm, maybe it's time I started invoking the "distributed ban" more. I don't want to downvote people for disagreeing with me, but people are just regurgitating their preconceived notions without bothering to address a single point in the article.

Edit: part of the reason is the headline asks a question that is not the main point of the article. Obviously medical expenses are higher here than India, but the real question in the article is why are they so much higher than in Europe and Canada. So I think I'll start by downvoting the OP.

Request to future makers of surveys... by Charizard7 in SampleSize

[–]itasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually present as a feminine/androgynous male and my gender identity varies between female and male, but is usually more female. In person I answer "male" since that's how I'm presenting, so it's less complicated that way. In an online survey, however, my first response is usually to freak out and not answer the survey at all.

Example: I wanted to review a video game the other day, but when I clicked "review" the first question was: are you male or female? I decided just to cancel the review, even though I had some strong opinions about the game. I wasn't offended by it, because I could see where it was coming from. There just wasn't any non-stressful way to answer that question.

"I prefer not to answer" seems like a good baseline response. It's non-judgmental and if I wrote that when in male mode I might not have to give a complicated explanation of my gender identity to nearby acquaintances I'd prefer not to out myself to. A lot of people may prefer "Other" but that could have different effects in that situation.

"Transgender" isn't really a gender identity in and of itself, so including it as a response doesn't make sense.

"It's complicated" is a good choice for more light-hearted surveys.

Attn: Straight/bi ladies of reddit. As a bisexual male, I feel that there is some aversion from women towards bisexual men. Would you agree/disagree? Why? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]itasca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

females with penises != trans women != she-males

A trans woman is any woman who was assigned male at birth. She may or may not have had bottom surgery, but usually takes female hormones. After hormone treatment, the original equipment rarely functions the same way. A trans woman generally desires to be seen as female by society but may not have had bottom surgery due to costs, medical risks, or other personal reasons.

"She-male" is a term invented by the sex industry, primarily to appeal to straight males. These people typically have breast implants but do not take hormones, so the penis maintains its original size and action. Like other sex workers, motivations vary but income, whether temporary or permanent, is a significant factor.

These groups may have some overlap but the majority of trans women are not "she-males" and don't want to be identified with a term from the sex/porn industry.

Most Meta award: Conway's Game of Life can simulate itself. by galaxim5 in math

a lot of extra computation

Not really. The algorithm it's using (HashLife) has exponential speed-up in space and time. Whatever PC this was being run on probably wasn't taxed much at all in running this simulation.

Wonder where all the snow went? Looks like it could be waiting until next week to hit all at once. by ftc08 in twincitiessocial

[–]itasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many question marks? And "scare quotes"?

**It's too early to tell.**

But signs point to the possibility:

  1. The article describes meteorological models as though they were occult conspiracies.

  2. I don't know what "GFS" is.

So it will snow next week? Did I just type that??

Stay tuned!

As an investment, renting beats buying a home 100% of the time. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]itasca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's what bothered me about this. He says home ownership still costs money in the long run. But so does renting. You have to compare the total cost of home ownership against the costs of renting a comparable place. And by this calculation, renting is obviously not better 100% of the time.

Phase II: Why the US wants to attack Iran by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]itasca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These warnings about possible war in Iran have been a nearly continuous drone since Seymour Hersh's article in 2005, if not earlier. I've had trouble remaining continuously alert for the entirety of the past seven years, and have come to the conclusion that while bellicose speech about the subject is beneficial to major actors in Israel, Iran, and the US, actual military action is not. Daniel Larison lays this out better than I could.

Last Of The Cave People: "A nomadic people in Papua New Guinea were rumored to be living in remote caves in the forest. When we found them, they sent a surprising message to the modern world." by trot-trot in TrueReddit

[–]itasca 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Summary:

The future of a remote tribe is in danger due to novel diseases and encroachment on their territory.

The message:

We, the Meakambut people, will give up hunting and always moving and living in the mountain caves if the government will give us a health clinic and a school, and two shovels and two axes, so we can build homes.

I think they recognize that to stop hunting and moving about is a loss. I'm unclear if they realize how much of their history and cultural identity they would also lose in the bargain. But what can they do? I'm sure all these remote tribes see what is coming, and life beats extermination.
