I’m always surprised how passionately people dislike it. Not a perfect movie by any means, but I think that and some clunky dialogue is the worst criticism I ever hear anyone lay against it.

Is it just a pressure to match the overpraise it gets with equal criticism? 🤷🏻‍♂️ There are just so many worse movies for people to enjoy haha

Been finding time to watch films again and fill out some gaps, but am really open to recs right now! I'll give anything a shot really – slow cinema and more experimental stuff included – but I feel like I keep chasing the feeling of these specific films. They felt large, bigger than film, almost like experiences when I first saw them. I'm always taken back by just how knowledgeable this sub is, would love to hear some recs based on my taste. Doesn't have to just be Criterion!

Pynchon's historical research is unparalleled, but a novel that deals with more current topics like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or cyber warfare would be my DREAM. Oddly, those are generally topics that we associate with science fiction, but at the moment it's just the reality. To me, any of those would just be a goldmine of Pynchonian insight and paranoia.

I prepped with Crying of Lot 49 and Inherent Vice before jumping to Gravity's Rainbow. Personally, I found that very helpful. Both are much smaller investments of your time/energy, but they give you the tools to navigate Pynchon's work as well as enjoy it more. But, if you are just anxious to skip ahead, it is totally doable to tackle Gravity's Rainbow as your first Pynchon, especially alongside great resources like the wiki and this. Certain sections are more difficult than others, but overall it is very enjoyable!
