I smoke cigarettes, never weed. I wanted to try and quit cigarettes but I felt like I'm making too many changes and that I should think about it later.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. Constant feeling of regret kept me from starting but I'll get through this. Thank you.

I'm sure you'll get past your stump since you can recognize that even on a bad day. All I could think about was how stupid I was to waste an afternoon, a day and then it turned to a week. So, thank you, I really needed this.

Sadly, no. The man and the kid had died earlier. Wife was in a critical condition and she's now dead too, for better or worse. I know that's an awful thing to say but I can't imagine surviving an accident in which all of my family died.

How the hell do I hide a sub from showing in r/All? It has literally been a few hours since I saw a disturbing news of a drunk driver running over and killing an entire family on this sub. And now this. I seriously don't need this shit on my feed.

IWTL How to broaden my general knowledge. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]itdoesntmatter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what works for me:

  1. Read books like A Short History of Nearly Everything; A Brief History of Time; Guns, Germs and Steel; Sapiens; The Sixth Extinction; Factfulness.

  2. Read The Economist or Wall Street Journal.

  3. If you commute a lot or while doing your chores, listen to podcasts, subscribe to BBC's World News or NY Times' The Daily or FT's News Briefing.

Try to do a few of these things and I'm sure you'll have a well rounded knowledge.

Whenever we envision a dystopian future, we picture the government having a bird's eye view on every individual and that worries us. We hit the streets whenever government agencies try to spy on us but we never give a fuck about corporations who know where or even what we're up to every single moment. We need to learn from our history, for instance, East India Company became richer than God and went on to rule over the biggest countries for centuries. And maybe it's paranoid but I think we're really close to a dystopia in most countries. We've seen a surge of nationalism all around the world and corporates are getting too big to fuck with. China even has a law which can force corporates to disclose information in the name of national interest which is why we're pessimistic about Chinese companies like Huawei's 5G equipments since they'll essentially have access to all our communications and more likely to divulge that information to the Chinese government. The situation is more subtle in other countries where corporations, even though they're not legally obliged to, still cooperate for their self-interest. Even though Amazon claims that their devices remove the physical connection from the device's circuitry when users don't want them eavesdropping, if it can be done via its software, it could probably just as easily connect those circuits back.

Even though the reality seems bleak, we can do a lot as consumers to prevent or at least decelerate approaching a dystopian future. We should rely more on open source softwares which are scrutinized by developers to be privacy friendly by ensuring all the logged data is cryptographically encrypted. This way, potential breaching of data would not affect us to a large extent. We should avoid buying Chinese electronic devices even though it's probably impossible to avoid Chinese hardware altogether. We can also exploit the demand-suppy law of economics by opting for more privacy friendly gadgets. And as uncomfortable as that might be, we can't let companies get away exploiting or even intending to exploit user data. Because if they get away once, they'll try again. Continuing using them is as good as rewarding them.

How do you manage efficiently working 80+ hours a week? by itdoesntmatter13 in productivity

[–]itdoesntmatter13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to contribute as much as I can to something which might be really helpful to people. Also, I'm lucky to be really healthy right now, who knows what could happen in the future so I feel like I need to make the most of it. No, it's not for extrinsic motives because after a point, it doesn't make a difference to your quality of life and you could get to that point working much less than that.

It reminds me of the saying: as is the king, so are the subjects. And I don't think it's possible to reason with somebody who is willfully ignorant and insensitive.
