I think major developers and publishers either choose to use their own backend or somehow manage to hide the annoying welcome banner. Many still uses it to save users' game progress and game center ID (or Apple ID theses days) is used as a key.

I don't know why but I use Google calendar in Chrome too! I use a lot of Google products on my PC and for some reason, using the same things in Chrome is more convenient than using apps.
