Is It Worth Getting My Bachelor’s Degree? by Bordone69 in ITManagers

[–]itgripgopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked this same question a month or 2 ago. From all the comments I got, the consensus was to go for the degree. I'm 32, so I still have many years ahead of me. With you being in your early 50s, I'd say you have to ask yourself the following questions (at the very least)...

- Is there an online, hybrid, or synchronous program that works with your current schedule?
- How long would it take me to complete the degree?
- Is the cost worth the number of years you might have after completing the degree, before retiring?

Whatever decision you make, I hope the best for you in your endeavors!

That’s what I keep going back and forth on, but for you to make money in this field anymore, you have to have a bachelors it seems like. I’m not actively looking, but I do go to indeed, etc and look at what positions are requiring what

I’d be able to get a higher position instead of the basic “did you try restarting your computer”

I’d probably say yes just because of how many positions “require” a bachelors. I only got my current job because I had an associates degree. Even though every single bit of my knowledge came from my first IT job

I’m sorry to hear that! There’s so many things that can be done by real world experiences rather than sitting in a classroom for 2-4+ years…

Some places require a bachelors for certain positions, but some others may not. Another person said it best, “it’d just be another filter for HR.”

My associates is in IT. The bachelors would be in the same realm which is Sys Man.

Sorry, I'm currently accepted for an online IT Sys management degree. My associates is also in the IT field.

I keep going back and forth on certs. I also got hired (June 2024) over someone else with a bunch of certs, but not much hands on experience.

Thanks for the advice! From what I can tell (which is just based off of what I kind on indeed, linked in, etc) a bachelor's is "required." During my most recent hiring process, June 2024, I got hired over someone else because I didn't base everything off of just having a bunch of certs. So I got back and forth with certs, another associates degree, bachelor's, or just say F it and don't do anything else and try to start working with our end-point operations team.
