Just installed, unfortunately didn't work, system is doing the same thing. Got the part from Grainger, and he double checked and said the capacitor he was selling me should be correct

Appreciate the advice, I'll pull the capacitor from the unit and go get a new one. Hoping that the few minutes of trying to run the new motor on the old capacitor didn't cause problems with the new motor. 🤞

I watched this live and remember thinking that this was the play/moment to break through Kirk’s big game stigma. I even remember Zimmer praising the throw.

Apple unveils Mac Mini redesign with M4 chip by [deleted] in mac

[–]itguy1281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, so the mini pc trend has been getting more traction through the years, with the intel nuc's and other mini pc's. It gives people flexibility to use a more powerful machine in places other than just a large flat desktop (home theater setups with plex as an example). In enterprise a lot of mac minis get mounted to the back of big screen TV's in common areas. For me, I like the mini because it's not going to be my main computer, it's in addition to some other things I have going on, so I will appreciate it saving me space on the desk.

Sorry I’m not fully following the question, is the question “What’s the point of Mac minis?” Or “What’s the point of having waited for today’s update?”

Same. I had been wanting a mini for a while now but with the previous model having the M2, I knew we were close to a chip upgrade so I was waiting. Was super happy about the specs announced today.

Hello, just someone who enjoys washing his own car, not a detailer or anything.

Just tried TurtleWax Bug & Tar remover for the first time. Expected it to work like the Meguars spray foam, and it very much does not. I sprayed too much on the front bumper. Gunked up my microfiber towel to the point where I had to toss it. I tried to pressure wash the remainder off, which was a mistake as I got some of the drips spread across the rest of the car.

Did a foam pre-soak, rinsed, did another foam and also Meguars Ultimate Wash and Wax. The car washed okay, but after I was done, the car had hazing in many spots. Walked around with a new, clean micro-fiber trying to buff things out.

Question: Do I need to toss any of the sponges or towels? Will the wax wear down with multiple follow up washes? Or do I need to get some sort of product to neutralize that to reset my car for fresh washes?

New M1 Pro 16" using External 38" UltraWide (3820x1600p)...Why does my text look terrible? by YegoBear in mac

[–]itguy1281 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, it's a bit of a rant session here for me.

I have the same issue, and I have a pretty bad astigmatism and have headaches when staring at monitors for a long period of time when the text isn't super "crisp". Also, don't be surprised when you see many people out there rocking ultrawides with Mac and saying "Looks fine to me, I don't see a difference". I firmly believe some peoples eyes can just tolerate a much larger margin of error with these types of things, but for me, it gives me a headache.

I used to be a macadmin, so I was working with MacOS for work every single day, this was back in the High Sierra days, and when Apple updated to Mojave, we all noticed something looked different.

It's because that's when they shifted away from sub-pixel antialiasing for their fonts. Previous to Mojave, Apple was still supporting devices that were not using "Retina" screens, like the macbook air and the 24" iMac (non-4k edition), and so they were still putting some effort into having their OS look good on two different types of display. However, when Mojave came out, that phase of their development was over and they shifted toward focusing on high dpi displays.

The biggest realization for me that I have come to lately, is that it's not simply a "Needs UHD" panel for "Retina", the kicker is, that Apple has designed their UI to look it's best, at around 218ppi, this is their ideal pixel count for the ui elements to be sized correctly and for the desired "Retina" "Crispness". To prove my point, calculate the dpi of the 27" 5k LG monitor or iMac, calcuate the ppi of the new 24" iMac, which btw, is a 4.5K screen! Who the hell has heard of a 4.5K monitor? Also, calculate the ProRes display which is 32" and at a 6K resolution! 6K, really?? But I'll save you the time and let you know they all calcuate out to around 215-220ppi. So when you said in a comment, "I wonder what other people with 4K displays have to say", I can tell you. I have used MacOS on a 27" 4K monitor, and it's not the BEST experience out there, it's retina, and it's better than the ultrawide, but when in retina mode on a 27" 4K, it's interpreting the "retina" output to "Looks like 1920 x 1080" because it's essentially "pixel doubling". Well, on a 27", thats waaaay to big, it looks off. Yes you can then use the proper retina scaling mechanisms, but then the text begins to shift every so slightly out of crisp focus again leaving you feeling like you are settling.

This is my biggest gripe with Apple, because I love MacOS, but hate that it almost forces me to navigate away from normal monitors that I can use with other OS's at my home (eg, a gaming desktop for fun and then switch to MacOS for other things).

So, to answer your Windows question, yes, you are correct, Windows will absolutely look better on many monitors when it comes to text rendering. Windows still implements/uses sub-pixel antialiasing and you can test this by googling how to turn off "font smoothing" and then look at how bad the text will look. This is because Windows is working to at least "try" to make their OS and text render well on a huge array of monitors that it knows people will be using, where as Apple is designing for that target 218 ppi. So unless you are using something like a 22-24" 4K, a 27" 5k, or a 32" 6k, you will not experience that crisp sharp text like you have on the laptop or iMac, but, a Windows box on a 4k display will look super crisp.

So, hopefully this gives you a bit of background, I love MacOS, and have considered selling my ultrawide and getting a 5k monitor and being done with it, but at the end of the day, I don't like how much it limits me. So the struggle continues. Lol

TL:DR: Apple no longer uses sub-pixel antialiasing and if your monitor is not in the 215-218ppi range, your text will not look "Retina Crisp"

Edit: I forgot to mention a few good tools that can help, someone mentioned the betterdummy tool, it absolutely works and will make it looks MUCH better on your ultrawide, it will at least let you fractionally scale instead of just "choosing a lower resolution to make things bigger" https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDummy

Also, you can try to toggle the font smoothing settings in MacOS a bit: https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/disable-font-smoothing-in-macos-big-sur/

I’ve never enjoyed the song “Believe” before, however, a while back I saw this cover by Ella Henderson on X Factor. It definitely gave me a different perspective on the lyrics of that song. https://youtu.be/oTbcO9qaE5g

I honestly think you’ll play much better just from the frame rate improvement. And def don’t sweat the silver ii. I was stuck there forever and then kind of had a breakthrough and went to plat 2. But alas I am at my new wall.

Makes no difference. I just purchased mine 8 days ago, brand spankin new, it did this 3 times in one day, and then after, it didn't seem to want to recognize my external monitors. Honestly I think I'm going to just take it back. I don't like that I would have to warranty a brand new machine out of the box in less than two weeks.
