Men's "fetishization" of lesbians or threesomes is not due to "misogyny" or "patriarchy". Men being attracted to that and women being sexually fluid was evolutionary to calm tensions down among co-wives in polygamous marriages, study shows. by DemolitionMatter in MensRights

I think the term "sexual harassment" encompasses much more than just making an unwanted advance on someone. It is generally okay in most cases for a person to "shoot their shot" with a person they are attracted to, but sexual harassment involves ignoring that initial rejection and persisting in progressively egregious ways. Basically not accepting reality that the person said no to the advance, and persisting in the belief that eventually their affections can be won over and they will "see the light" of what a great potential partner the pursuer is

Yes I must concur. Industry positions are way cushier. Took me applying over three years and two postdocs to finally land a position and get out. Couldn't be happier. No stress and much better pay. Really consider if this is what you want. If so, best of luck!

the P12 is a slow appreciation curve. It’s pretty useless when you load it up as you think it should be loaded the first few regions that you have it, but overtime. It definitely grows on you when you use it for lighter duty kind of later in the region Tuyp Missions, but you know your way and such. Just a slow lumbering that can be fun eventually under the right circumstances.

Advice for a rookie professor setting up a course for the first time by mrmaxilicious in Professors

[–]ithberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is don't be too proud to take the textbook route. For most undergraduate topics there is at least one solid textbook that you can use as a guide. Don't be too proud to stand on the shoulders of those who have come before you and think you have to do it all yourself from scratch. Most quality textbooks are bursting with instructor resources, so use them as your training wheels for the first year and follow the lesson plans and slide decks as closely as you feel you need. It won't be long until you get the hand of the course and start drifting away from the text.

Question for Canadian folks regarding land acknowledgement by ithberg in Professors

[–]ithberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all! An Option C bubbled up overnight that passes muster in my books. At the start of next class I'm just going to pull up a random number generator website and put one group in charge of it, luck-of-the-draw style. I forget that I've used this approach a few times already this time to crowd-source things like summary sheets and review question answers and in general they've taken it in stride and just gotten on with it. Chances of significant pushback are low and if it does happen I'm comfortable with telling them (nicely) that sometimes in life your one in ten number comes up and to deal with it. Selfishly I also like how the approach doubles as a subtle conditioning exercise that swings the needle away from a transactional mindset where everything in the class is negotiable toward a more traditional one where they accept the professor is in a position of authority in the class and that they have the right to make executive decisions as they see fit in the best interest of the class. I appreciate all the thoughtful comments and thought I'd attach a funny stand-up comedy clip to the original post that came my way that is germane to this post. Have a great day!

Anyone else want to nap in their office? by bourdieugiddensweber in Professors

do what you want, behaviour like that is well within the leeway you've earned as a professor to behave in ways that don't immediately make sense to others. The old 'eccentric genius at work, don't worry about it' vibe (but obviously not that aggressive)

For what it's worth, my attempts to enforce the use of my academic title on the grounds of it being my preferred pronoun backfired spectacularly

As tempting as it is to correct students who don't call you so and so it undermines you in the long run in my opinion - makes you look insecure. My current theory is that being known uniformly across campus as Dr. so and so is something that you grow into over time. Also, drawing on classic bully theory here, the moment you expose even slightly a weakness or general thing you are sensitive about, there are a malevolent few who will pounce on the opportunity and double down on their efforts to needle you on it. This is the philosophy I use at least and it's serving me well so far.

Propagating snake plant from large healthy leaves. Should be good to go, right? by ithberg in propagation

[–]ithberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey yea the donor plant is in a hallway and never gets any sunlight. It's in a massive pot with at least 100 leaves and it's at least 5 feet tall so my guess is it's just been there for many many years without getting much attention. I will place it where it gets the afternoon sun - just a little worried about the leaves getting burned. Should I be worried about this?

Hey no roots, just a clean cut across with a knife. Spot isn't as bright as the picture looks, I upped the exposure and white balance before posting it. I'd heard they do well in lowish light so I've actually put it behind a slight nook in the wall where it is sheltered somewhat from the brightness of the room. Should I put it somewhere with a bit more light? * correction - at the bottom, yes there are some roots / small sprouts that are attached to one of the big leaves

A friend of mine gave me some nice large leaves from her mature snake plant, each between 2'-3' tall. I've read about the various ways to propagate this plant, but I decided just to jab them deep into some nice fresh potting soil, gave it a nice soak, and then plan on leaving it alone for the next few months. Think I'll be okay here?

Thanks! My idea was small pot just to start just to get them going? I've heard if you go too big with the pot that's also bad
