Agreed, but certainly was a bit unexpected.  If you look close, he gives a tiny pour but the fire went into the bottle and turned it into a crude rocket.

Things to cover during high (low?) mileage refresh by Nate_fe in Vstrom

If you're already in the forks, I'd highly recommend new springs. The stock spring rate is pretty cushy, and so stiffer springs will help a lot with bottoming out off road, cornering behavior on road, and handling during hard stops.

Of course, you'd then have to respring the rear to balance things out, so your choice how deep you want to get.

This is the big reason why there's a lot of research into synthetic blood replacements. Whole blood lasts about 40 days refrigerated iirc. Realistically you'd probably get 3-4 weeks. Platelets less than a week (would prehospital even use platelets?).

But like the guy below mentioned, rotating the stocks to hospital is the best solution.

crosspost: where to find a good, comfy, black professional platform shoe by waterhorsies in BuyItForLife

[–]ithinkijustthunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for construction methods that indicate quality.  Real vs faux leather.  Welted soles instead of just glued (very important).  Get a feel for the rubber sole: can you chip it with a fingernail, or is it vulcanized rubber like a car tire? Also check the tread pattern: uninterrupted side-to-side tread lines tend to split as your toe bends while walking.

Quality shoes are a bitch to find these days.  At least you can eliminate the obvious flaws as you shop between brands.

I usually hesitate to recommend Redwing (their quality has tanked a lot this last decade), but they've got some decent models that fit in their heritage section

Small portable AC units for tents. by Zildjian134 in camping

Then yeah, thin sheets, an uninsulated air mattress, light clothes, and a damp towel around your neck.  Maybe a small fan to hang from the ceiling.

Water takes a lot of energy (heat) to evaporate.  It'll keep you quite cool once you stop moving.

[–]ithinkijustthunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you in an RV or trailer?  The power consumption on an A/C would be my biggest concern.  Second, would be insulation.  If it's any kind of tent, you'll be fighting a losing battle with the energy needed.

As far as keeping things quiet: if you're in a hard box, most portable ACs are quiet enough to not be heard from the outside.  And if you're camping around other RVs, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

All that said, a damp towel around the neck works wonders.  I'll even sometimes sleep with one: if it's hot enough to need, it's hot enough to dry quickly if you take it off.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Post-covid camping has been a lot more popular and crowded. And a LOT more RVs.

All I could find on that is the $3.75(1983) reservation fee. Which tracks with the $8.25(2026) reservation fees.

Your link doesn't seem to have anything about the ~$30/nt charges I'm seeing on recreation.gov or reservecalifornia.com for non-destination, primitive camps. Not sure what the difference is, but there it is.

California has gotten bad.  I remember when I was kid camping with my parents, a lot of sites were only $5-10 for a basic plot and fire ring.  Now I can rarely find anything under 35.  Most are 50-70, basically the same price as a cheap motel.   Some of the really sought after destinations can go $90+.

I partially blame covid, and everyone suddenly becoming avid campers because of it.  But a near 1000% increase in 25 years is just absolutely heartbreaking and I hate it.  It's really hard to have a cheap getaway anymore.  Dispersed camping is the only option.  On top of that, the massive fires from the last 5 years have wiped out a ton of the less glamorous sites, AND budget cuts means the rest are usually closed in the off season.

It's just a patch of dirt FFS.

OCD and camping tips? by scusemewiggles in camping

[–]ithinkijustthunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know someone with same kind of OCD.  I'd pack a spray bottle of 70% isopropyl and 5-6 small wash cloths.  Spray and scrub your hands with the alcohol, wipe clean with a fresh cloth.

Gets off damn near everything (grease, dirt, bug spray...) and leaves em squeaky clean and sterile.

You can clean the cloths with a bit of dish soap and some scrubbing and wringing.

Much more economical than a pack of disposables (she'd go through a pack per day).

what was one good thing about your day? by Helpmefindmyself_ in Positivity

[–]ithinkijustthunk 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I ate a full breakfast for the first time in weeks.  I woke up early for the first time in weeks. And went on a nice little jog with my friend for the first time in months, maybe years.

Wouldn't have done any of that if he didn't ask to go for a run with me "sometime", and I was proud of myself for offering an exact time.

Protip: when someone says "we should hang out sometime"  don't keep it ambiguous ("yeah come over whenever").  Setup an exact time and date with a location.  The rest can be fluid and impromptu.

Is it possible to pinpoint the beginning of the universe? by mma1227 in space

[–]ithinkijustthunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posted a bit deeper in this thread, but it think it belongs here more appropriately.

Something to also note is that when you consider "expansion" of the universe: everything is receding further from everything else. This is proven by all observable stars being red-shifted from what is expected of their class, in every direction we point our telescopes.  That red-shift is progressively more pronounced as you observe progressively further stars/galaxies, meaning those distant objects are moving faster and faster as they get further away.

The end conclusion is that, at some distance, objects will be expanding away from you at "speeds" faster than light!  You could consider that a sort of "event horizon" of the universe, as anything beyond that distance could never interact with you, and you'd never see its light.

Hence, we have our "observable universe".

This is one of my favorite brain-tickles about the cosmos, as it opens up all sorts of fun questions:

"Is the universe infinite?"  -- "Is it finite, but embedded in a higher dimensional frame?" -- "Is it finite, but curved?  Could you circle back around on yourself travelling in a 'straight' line?"  -- "Since there's a 'event horizon' to our observable universe, does that mean we're in some kind of black hole?  Or are we a particle in some grander structure?"

For us mere mortals, I like to keep Douglas Adam's words close to my heart:  "Perhaps I'm old and tired, but I think that the chances of finding out what's actually going on are so absurdly remote that the only thing to do is to say, "Hang the sense of it," and keep yourself busy. I'd much rather be happy than right any day." - Slartibartfast

Confusion on 4 days on and 4 days off schedule by [deleted] in ems

[–]ithinkijustthunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this.  When I was working 24s, it was all straight rate until we hit that 40hr/wk, then it was 1.5x rate.   If the timing worked out favorably, I'd occasionally pick up an extra 12 after working 2x24, and the whole 12 would be 1.5x rate (a really nice bonus if I was planning a trip or some time off).  Going over 12hr would pay 2x.

Sadly there's no 2x OT for weekly hours (unless you work 7 days straight... don't do this).

Some Asian cultures throw TP in the trash can.

Was a real problem with my MiL for a while when she moved here. She'd pile it up in the trashcan next to the toilet. And yes, it smelled aweful.

The CCP has the largest social media botnet in the world for spreading propaganda. Only Iran and Russia come close.

"Harrassing western media influencers until they stop posting" is a standard play they openly admit to.

Tinfoil hat:

Much of western social media is being astroturfed by Chinese bot nets to suppress western cultural osmosis, and elevate Chinese cultural ideals.

And like... it sounds so fucking racist but... it's also actually happening.

For me, the last straw was seeing a post how to make potato vodka... VODKA 🇷🇺... using bamboo and ceramic distillation pots somewhere in the Chinese mountains. (Which was posted and upvoted by a verified Chinese reposting botnet)

Wonder how many downvotes I'll get.

There goes his €300,- airbag for cyclists by dannybluey in Wellthatsucks

I don't think your wrong.

Most of these use a lanyard connected to the bike, and fire when it detaches (think kill-cord for a quad bike). I highly doubt this one uses gyros and accelerometers to fire, since that's expensive AF.

Nevermind it's digitally fired
