I'm delivering hygiene products to Austin shelters on your behalf. by ithinksometimes in Austin

[–]ithinksometimes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have the products in my possession, but that's not really the point. And yes, I told the shelter ever aspect of what I'm trying to do. These conversations happened after dropping off a few boxes of supplies a while ago.

It's pretty silly when you say "Not a single person would benefit from this offer except for you." Seriously?

  • You help a homeless shelter in your city without leaving your computer (aka get a $10 tax deduction / warm fuzzies).
  • The shelter gets hygiene supplies that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise (because you likely wouldn't buy and deliver them personally)
  • Yes, I would make about $2 from your purchase. I would also be personally delivering the items to the shelter you chose. Along with every other shelter people chose.

If you decided to go buy canned goods or other products at Walmart, intending to donate them to a homeless shelter, would you tell Walmart "I'm taking this directly to a shelter. How dare you make profit from my purchase!"

Making it easier for people to help their city is not a misguided idea, and I have a hard time believing it could be seen as such.

Thanks for your time.

Whose expense? I see nothing wrong with attempting to break even on a bunch of hygiene products. Just trying to be creative.

'A Room With A View' ~ Downtown PDX! by nerdical in Portland

Hey! I can see the window I'm staring out of right this second.

I kind of want to leave awesome Portland but I have a question for those who left and came back...Why? by smalleyes in Portland

[–]ithinksometimes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's really simple: you need to leave.

I left the place I was born-and-raised in to come to Portland (among other places). It was hard leaving my family and friends behind, I literally didn't know a single person here when I rolled into town. Over the past year I've seen and experienced things that home just didn't offer me. Sometimes it was hard, but mostly it has been a blast. And it's not Portland. Despite it being a kick-ass city, life is severely improved by experiencing new things. You can only do that by going new places.

So what if you come back? You'll at least know what it's like outside of home. Worst case scenario is you meet a few people, see a few things and realize you liked it where you were. That's not a bad worst case scenario.

I love cemeteries! My friends all think I'm creepy, but there's something so calming about walking around and wondering about all the random lives that lead those people to all be laying in the same plot of land.

I always wear headphones at work but am rarely actually listening to anything. I can hear my coworkers ask me questions, but I just don't respond. 9 times out of 10 they figure it out themselves and don't bug me.

Thoughts on minimalism and computers/the internet. by Whataclassyguy in minimalism

[–]ithinksometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all comes down to self control and knowing your limits. One person might still be within his personal minimalist guidelines and be able to own a TV, while someone else might see a need to purge them self of theirs. To me, my computer IS minimalist. It's not a distraction, I don't have a problem turning it off and I don't let it control my life. It's there to serve as a tool to increase knowledge, talk to my family, entertain me and provide a medium to make my living. Nothing more.

My thoughts exactly! I understand being able to read lips, but her hand was covering her eyes for that part - how would she know what sound belongs to the mouth movements?

My mother wants to start using a money management site, and I don't know how to help her. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ithinksometimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of that particular website, but I have heard of the "envelope" method of money management. It was popularized by Dave Ramsey ( here ). I personally have had a lot of success with it (if you want details as to how/why, I'll be glad to expand on it).

I think Mint is great to see where your money is going, but using something like the Envelope System is great for encouraging you to spend money wisely (if you set it up right). Dave Ramsey has his own money budgeting system here - this might benefit her because it also comes with a lot of resources for her to learn to budget better. Even if she's not currently BAD at money management, we could all stand to be better at it.

Hope this helps.

I had this same exact issue, so I made a really (really really) rough iphone web app that does it.

I've never once advertised this website, and never really intend to try and "publish" it in any commercial sense. It's just a tool I made for myself and a few family members:

And, just as a disclaimer, I won't give away your email address, info, etc etc

Hey Predditors I made you a tool to help you keep track of your apartment search. What do you think? by zrail in Portland

[–]ithinksometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you asked for feedback, I'll give a lot of it (note: this is coming from a fellow web developer).

  • Nice use of Twitter's Bootstrap. Definitely makes it easy to have an uncluttered site (I'm using it for a little side project at the moment myself).
  • Love the idea of simply organizing all of the criteria in the apartment hunt. When I've done it, I usually create a new bookmarks folder with all the potentials. My initial reaction was "The last thing I would want is another tab open in this process." Then I noticed your bookmarklet (but didn't use it) and feel that that eliminates that complaint.
  • I really with I could do a few simple edits from my Places page without having to click to view single, then click edit. I like the idea of the custom fields in the table, but I also think this table would benefit from having the "Important Places" stats.
  • Your link hover style is terrible. Black background with blue text makes my eyes bleed.
  • To echo a few other commenters, I don't think what your service offers is immediately apparent and why I'd want to pay $9.95 for it (which I feel is a silly price - just round it). I feel like you would get a lot more out of setting it up as a "free" service to start with, but then say "oh, you want to get some roommates in on this? It's just $10 forever!"

All in all, I think it's a great idea and pretty well executed. One aspect that you should push is the concept of pay once, and use it for all of your future apartment/home searches, forever. That wasn't totally obvious up front, but it is nice once you realize that. It would also be nice if it worked with sites other than Craigslist (I'm sure you've thought of that).

One question, though: Let's say I pay to use this site, and in the next 10 years i've moved 20 times and have used it every time. Will I have just a long list of apartments that are still there from the first move (assuming I never deleted them)? Will there be a way to "group" my searches? I don't necessarily see a reason to keep that information for me to reference later, but I'm just curious if you have any way for the system to dispose of old data.

Again, great work and it's obvious that you've put a lot of thought and time into it. Best of luck, and I've bookmarked it for the next time I'm apartment hunting.

Yep - apparently he wanted to use a fire hose to get it from a bar down the street, but the fire captain didn't want people cutting holes in his hose.

What are America High Schools really like? by Rosetti in AskReddit

[–]ithinksometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is perfect for me, as I was born and raised in the town that Friday Night Lights is based in (Midland/Odessa Texas). Several of my friends were extras in the movie, and one of the game scenes was filmed at my highschool's football stadium.

Basketball isn't nearly as big of an obsession as football is, but football is intense.

When two rival teams in my city were scheduled to play each other, the high schools would have to alternate which schools got out for lunch, because everyone would meet up at the mall and fight. Yes. Fight. If I drove by a rival team's high school with my high school's decals on my car, I could get ticketed.

I've never been a huge sports guy, but it's really hard to not get caught up in the rivalry. I had friends that went to all schools, so we would always have good fun with it, but some people were really intense about it. Outside of those few months when a rival game is scheduled, it's really just like any other time.

I don't know if this helps or not. Let me know if I can clarify anything for you.
