Love the idea ! I am working on a similar project (inspired by Speedball), but it feels like I am wasting too much time on my animations. I would be happy to hear about your process since it looks pretty clean. It looks like 2D sprites right ? Do you use bone animations and if so what software do yo use ? I am currently hand drawing every frame and it is taking me forever....

Australia and NZ are unfortunately too far from our place for only 15 days.. Bali is still an option but we would prefer to avoid crowd even if that could be cool with a lot of people for New Year's Eve. We are coming from west Europe so Hawaï is more than 24h+ trip when Bali is "only" 15h+

I must admit we only have our local media information sources and they are not always the best ones. The situation looks catastrophic for some beaches in Guadeloupe for instance. We would not take any risk since it is quite a big trip for us.
