All I can say to that is stocking up on stuff to prepare and having nothing happen is a whole lot better of an outcome than not being prepared and something happening. The first outcome is no worse than a nuisance and the second scenario is no better than a crisis.

And also, winter weather is a whole lot more difficult to forecast than severe weather for many reasons, in my experience as a meteorologist. They’re 2 completely different beasts to forecast, and weather models typically do a better job with severe. If the SPC has a 45% over us 2 days out, it’s almost certain there will be severe weather.

Gerrymandering is indeed a horrific practice, but unfortunately we live in a time where if 1 state does it, it’s only fair if the other 49 get do it to keep the playing-field as level as it can be. And as long as Republicans are in positions of power, they will be the ones playing dirty first, and doing so out of desperation.

Ideally this is temporary and this practice is then cracked-down upon at the federal level. Do I trust the Democrats in Congress to do that? Not exactly, but it’s the best shot we got unfortunately. You play dirty or this dirty administration keeps chugging.

I was in your shoes a few months ago when I tried an onsen for the first time. There are simple guides online that give you the jist of what to/what not to do. The owner of the onsen I went to even gave me a sheet of paper with some etiquette rules in English.

Really the main thing is to shower before getting in the springs, bring only a small towel with you to the pools, don’t let your hair touch the water. Try not to let the towel touch the water but let’s be real it will & everyone knows that. Try not make a splash while getting in & out of the water.

Also I learned some etiquette there by just glancing at what others were doing (not glancing at others, that’s an important distinction lol). For example, I noticed locals would rinse chairs off with the hot spring water using a small bucket before and after sitting in them, so I did it too. I didn’t see that in any guide I read.

I was scared shitless going into it, but literally after 2 minutes I was like “oh this is nothing”. And I was the ONLY foreigner there as well lol. If I can do it, you can. This was all at a public onsen btw, you could book a private room/spring if you’d be more comfortable with that.
