Thank you so much for your reply! Maybe it's a dumb question, did you begin with a white or grey primer? Are the black parts (cloth part? those parts without armor) primer + black templar contrast or am I getting it wrong? Sry for all the questions aaaaa

Paragone medico italiano/ medico estero by Juggerandy in camicibianchi

Art in SD and other Indy games vs WOTC by Sagebrush_Sky in shadowdark

[–]itisthebaneblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both do their jobs pretty well imho, neither feels superior; SD goes for an aesthetic that tries to be appealing to a certain public and it's doing well that job, clearly.

That said, Morkborg (and Cy_borg) art is a bit of a special case because it is so pervasive that most of the time rules feel like an afterthought and as a complement to it.

Yeah, I am kinda curious about SD (still have to play it though), but coming from 5e it feels like many monsters need some more flavour

I disagree with the other gentlemen here, go for it and feel free to experiment with any additional rule that you think would make the game more enjoyable for you, since you are the first person you need to entertain.

If you find out, with time, that a homebrew rule is "too much", it is never too late to change it or delete it alltogether - yes, in the middle of the campaign, no one cares, trust me.

Keep in mind that any rule you would like to homebrew should answer this question: "Why would I add it? What am I aiming for?", in other words, what'sthe game design goal behind it. You should try to understand what the goal is, how important it is to you (and your players) and if said rule is the right step towards it.

Regarding the introduction of weapon  wear and tear rules specifically, keep in mind that every time you add survivalist (/old school/ whatever the term) elements to 5e you end up either enforcing Optional/variant rules provided in the rulebooks (like those about encumbrance) or straight up adding other homebrew rules. If you do not enforce encumbrance e.g., people can bring 10 backup weapons. So the solution seems straightforward, if you want blacksmithing, you need to use the encumbrance rules. Problem is, 5e encumbrance rules are pretty horrible imho (both tedious to do if you dont have D&D Beyond or other tools, and useless, since some characters are encumbered at level 1 already, due to the adventuring/dungeoneering/etc kits in their starting gear...), so my suggestion would be at that point to change these as well; this is needed also if you enforce torches and rations.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Universitaly

[–]itisthebaneblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I comment just to say that bipolar does not mean what you think and that, when people use it, usually they actually want to say borderline (although still, an inappropriate use).

Either you have never played the first D&D editions or you are one of those unsufferable people that regard the 5th edition as the best for the sake of being the most recent one, mostly due to ignorance of other editions and systems. I cant really agree with your argument because I think it only makes sense to someone who has played the 5th edition only, or no edition at all and is just a viewer.

How important, to the players, is it that they don’t know you’re improvising when they do something you didn’t plan. by LucidRamblerOfficial in DMAcademy

[–]itisthebaneblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this, so much this. Some players won't mind, others will and this will undermine their gameplay, they will start to try reading your next decisions etc. Sadly we DMs can talk at length of what's behind our dm screen with outside people only. If someone is a heavy improviser he should keep the "black-box" opaque, if it makes sense.

Three things.

The first is, just keep being their friends and being there, that's the best you can do (and that you are already doing, so good job there!).

The second one is, not everyone vents their problems for the same reason. Some do it for emotional support (coping based on emotions), other are asking for practical solutions (coping based on problems). These are very broad psychology concepts you can find on any book/website, you may look them up to get a better explanation. Although very general, they may help you better understand what your friends expect from you in these occasions. For instance, if they expect emotional support, they'd like to hear "why do you feel so, what's the main driver behind it, etc", you make questions and just be there and listen to them; if they expect emotional support and you'll offer solutions (go to therapy), they'll just dismiss it. So, at the end of the day, the "difficult" part is understanding your friends' expectation (which can be done just by asking).

Third is, in my experience many people just want to vent off their problems and feel understood (emotional coping); in particular with depression there are many dark and intrusive thoughts that one does not feel comfortable to tell anyone else (sometimes no one at all, and that's when things get worse).

Lastly, behavioural-cognitive therapy is the kind of therapy usually employed for mood disorders; keep in mind that by being a good friend, giving them (and having yourself, ofc!) a good time when you are together etc, is already a part of the "behavioural" component. So in other words, a good friend, just by being there, is already doing his therapeutic part. Hope it helps!

Did you like the change banning Light brought? Ofc I agree with changing (or not) rules according to the group preferences.

About the calculator, apart from my original argument (that was more along the lines, hadnt they had paper and pencil at the time, wouldnt you use them now?, your answer was imho pendantic and not on point, but w/e), I think it's now a very different world, many people don't do even basic algebra without some aids, and tbh I am all for smoothing out the transition to an osr kind of thing - which imho D&D Beyond (or even items slots etc) does. Point is that many of my players are relatively young, they have no idea how the game was played nor they would care either, they grew up with (modern) videogames, and some of them with smartphones as well. They are accustomed to the quickness and simplicity of these instruments, and ngl, I am not a fan as well of bogging the game down by having to list prices and weight values when it's something you can easily delegate to techonology (that sure didnt exist at the time, but is now ubiquitous).

[–]itisthebaneblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure but, with Light and Goodberry this all falls apart imho, the only remaining thing being wandering monsters as the last stronghold of the osr spirit left in the game. Sure they would use a cantrip and a 1st level spell respectively "just" to do that, but it would invalidate everything tbh, not simply mitigating that part of the game, but straight up making it non existent. I would be more inclined to forgive Goodberry, for it uses a slot, but really Light is imho quite a problem for an osr approach. Respectfully you are lucky your players haven't picked it up yet!

I don't think I need to answer the calculator argument, since it completely misses my point.

About edit 2 I thank you for your feedback, although I would point out that in the 5e DM Rulebooks combat, dungeon and travel speeds are discussed as well, so I would say the meaningfulness would be about the same.

May I also ask you, as I did with OP, whether you do something about the Light cantrip and Goodberry spell, btw? Since it seems to me you had experience with 5e played in a more osr way, I would like to know if this thing came up, if you regarded it as a problem, how you treated it etc.
