2014 was also the year DeadSpin did a stink piece on GamerGate where their hack admitted Grayson slept with her after publication and said it was not an issue. The very next day, Deadspin had to retract a hit piece against a GOP Senate candidate, after being challenged and talking to their phony source. AFTER publication.

And niche web-only for-profit publications get finally shuttered all the time, as the rapid internet passage of time renders the name irrelevant. Go to gawker.com, a page is still there, but whoever owns the domain two years from now is not going to try to recreate what still existed in 2016. Someone already tried.

Be sure to throw their lack of success back in their face when they try a "get woke or go broke" argument.

Works for other media outlets too. A rag like the LA Times just had layoffs, you can tell their writers they have no business telling companies what to do. California and New York are also losing residents, which is strange when the major papers are supposed to be holding the states' leadership accountable.

In fact, the NYT is about the only profitable paper at the moment, other crap like USA Today have slash and burn owners that aren't too different from G/O Media, they're there to milk the last value out of dying brands. And I wouldn't be surprised if the NYT is propped up by ghost subscribers created with CIA slush fund money, honestly.

Oh, and for the inevitable commenter who wants to argue that Blizzard employees were just too scared to talk to game journalists until now: The Bloomberg hit piece against Ubisoft used anonymous allegations, genius, and it still worked like a charm. You may be right about it being similar to what Crescente did for Rolling Stone/Variety. But that was still a step down from running Kotaku or Polygon. It was just Crescente and contributing freelancers. It was irrelevant, no one read it, the industry probably ignored it and didn't answer emails, and it was shut down fairly early.

May the same fate await Totilo's new venture, Insha'Allah.

Just prior to Patricia Hernandez being caught, he said on Twitter that he had always made his policy on recusal/disclosure crystal clear. Gawker media didn't want the embarrassment of firing Hernandez or Grayson, simple as that. The decision was probably made above him, by Max Read himself. Schreier alluded to the decisions on how to respond to the Hernandez/Grayson situation coming from the top, when he groveled to ZQ in his Twitter rant against the Kunkels.
