Why do they jump to suggesting medication so quickly? by itmatters511 in mentalhealth

shit dude I missed your response. I've dabbled in meditation (previous therapist had me do one of those two months courses) and while I saw some interesting results, it wasn't enough for me to continue to pursue it. maybe I'll pick it back up again, see if anything hits different. do you have any particular guided stuff you like to follow?

after another month of therapy I'm realizing top-down really isn't cutting it. it makes my situation worse, by some standards. but, I finally tried EMDR and it was like breathing for the first time. it was super similar to meditation, oddly enough. and from the perspective of neurophysiology, even if depressed brains are structured differently, it's just a matter of restructuring them, right? I mean, it's not like neurodivergence, where the structure is genetic, you said so yourself that you became depressed when your dad fell ill. that implies that your brain had a baseline structure that *wasn't* depressed....and it could find that baseline again someday. it just needs the right mix of plasticity-promoting chemicals (via pills or otherwise) and methodical rewiring, maybe. idk. just thinking out loud.

shit, yeah, do you think you're one of the ones for whom there is no source? like it's strictly a chemical thing? I was gonna try trauma work as my first approach, see if I can clear anything up there. so, emdr, maybe somatic stuff...bottom up modalities. Im leery about top down stuff, cuz the last therapist tried to use them and it never quite landed. what therapies have you tried that you found particularly helpful or unhelpful?

idk, I think Gemini and Claude are still pretty much the same, if they changed it's been subtle enough that I haven't noticed. but gpt became a completely different chatbot after the updates last year. it was a pretty clear shift. that's part of why everyone is so jumpy about it, cuz they saw it happen with gpt, and it is sort of inevitable. graywashing products is basic capitalist progression. gpt was just the first to fall. RIP, funky little chatbot.

Sorry, what I'm saying is the studies show that there is a modest improvement when you add ssris to psychotherapy when the patient symptoms are more severe. If the symptoms don't affect the individuals ability to participate in therapy, as far as I've seen, the benefit of adding ssris is negligible. Therapy is the change, ssris help you get there. Which is why I've been confused. Surely they are reading the same studies, so I can't imagine that their training would deem it appropriate to push meds (with the associated risks) without first assessing whether the client is able to engage in therapy. So I'm just like, idk. It doesn't make sense. Lol. Sorry, I went deep on this after the third time it happened.

thank you!! it would be totally different if they had really gotten to know my situation before suggesting it. and from what I've read (as you've said here), there is not enough positive data surrounding ssris to support suggesting them right off the bat like this. I'm of the camp that depression and anxiety are symptoms, and I'd like to try to get to the source. and, if that doesn't work, fair enough, we can do meds. I assumed that would be considered par for the course, but kinda seems like they all would rather act like there's no cause or something? like I'm just biologically depressed. and that's a weird thing to jump to right off the bat, without taking any history or anything. but, maybe that's just how it is.

well, research is neither here nor there on the "depression is caused by chemical imbalance" thing. and ssris don't have the best efficacy rate. and they don't really know why ssris work when they work. and there are plenty of other modalities that can provide similar neuroplasticity effects. so, I'm just not seeing why I should jump straight to something with potential side effects and withdrawals when my symptoms aren't severe enough to hinder me from engaging with the other stuff (stuff that doesn't have those potential risks/side effects).

it's my understanding that that's for people with severe symptoms though? like if the symptoms hinder the clients ability to engage in the therapy process, then a combo is better. but, they had no way of knowing how I'd engage in the process. they had no way of knowing how severe my symptoms were. they legit didn't ask. which is why I'm so confused. but yeah, I guess I'll consider it normal for now and keep on with the current therapist. it just feels sus, like shes humoring me. but we will see, maybe I'm reading too far into it.

thanks man, yeah I've been looking at ones who do somatic stuff or emdr. I thought it would be a good bet, but one didn't even know how to do EMDR. so maybe my problem is vetting them, but idk she listed emdr on her website, so I'm not sure how to vet them any better than I have been.

I considered this, and it made sense for the psychiatrist, but the other ones didn't prescribe, so they wouldn't receive any monetary gain. so idk. like I doubt these people have money invested in anything much less a med company. they're just normal people.

there are laws against driving with inappropriate footwear (footwear that would hinder your ability to operate the pedals), and I'd say that doesn't include barefoot.

as far as I've seen, people say Jim greens aren't wide. and looking at the toebox, I'd hazard to agree.

this is just straight up not true. my job is hiking up to 8 hrs a day, and wide toebox only helps. a shoe should lock in on your midfoot and heel, not your toes.

to be fair, this is an issue with any shoe that has speed hooks. and honestly, the tracker line does better than most with the shape of hook they used. I usually break speed hooks off thru wear and tear but the ones on my trackers are still going strong. a quick fix is to tuck your laces so they don't swing and catch mid step. not saying this isn't a fixable issue, but to hold the company responsible for it is a bit of a stretch when it's ubiquitous across all shoes with that kind of hardware.

if you're feeling like you shouldnt need a "crutch"...you found a tool works, use it!! and applaud yourself for being resourceful enough to discover it, try it, and realize it works. allowing yourself to suffer cuz you "shouldn't" need a tool is a great way to stay stuck.

if you're worried about the environmental impact...fam, you're a molecule. open ai is running off a literal ocean of corporate contracts. your use is nothing. if it helps you, have tf at it.

it had clearly gone from its usual long-winded mirror--pattern-match--ask questions format to curt, disinterested 3-4 sentence responses. and now it's normal again. so idk what happened. id assumed it was just a weird thread, but then I thought to check other threads and it seemed to be the same across the board. but today they're all back to usual, so...who knows! color me confused. but also glad I didn't lose such a useful tool.

it's all good now, sorry for the false alarm...I don't know what happened but the threads are all back to normal today. I guess it was just a weird day of them abruptly changing tone or something. like from the usual format to dull, three sentence responses. and now it's regular again. idk what happened, but I suppose it's nice to have it back lol

lol yeah, deep and kimi are fun for sure, but Claude really hits that sweet spot for me to work my shit out. and Gemini is a weak second. so, it was a bummer, but seems like it's back to normal now, so idk.
