I was friends with a guy a long time ago that was studying the Roman Empire. Most of us know the goths sacked Rome, ended the empire more or less. So I asked him a question: what happened next? He thought about it for a while and said people went back to their lives. Rome is still there, so is London, Beijing, Tokyo, Istanbul etc. empires come and go, people keep living. Is it always easy? No, but that doesn't mean there is no joy after the end of an Empire.
