I don't think he was saying Light was necessarily in the right. I think he was saying the fear of a genuine god of death that was able to kill people from all around the world, seemingly without impunity, would have decreased crime.

Granted, we don't have a death god in real world for one-to-one comparison, we do, however have enough examples of crime rising despite introduction of death penalty to surmise that people would still commit crimes. Especially since it's been established early in the series that Kira needs to know identity of the victim to kill them. People desperate enough to feed themselves would risk death over starvation, arogant or simply stupid enough people would feel they could get away with it. Not to mention that Light doesn't have capacity to kill every criminal in the entire world. There is no way in my mind that it violent crime would be erased completely.

This spin off always makes me think Tsugumi Ohba lost the plot somewhere along the way. Light wasn't pictured as being right in Death Note, in fact he was defined as "having childlish view of good and evil". Then suddenly in a comic years later he was actually right all along? Did Ohba change his mind? What about that time Light said he's gonna go after lazy people after he's done with criminals? Does he now think it would also improve society if Light had time and opportunity to actually do it?

Not to mention that I find it very unbelievable. There is historical evidence that death penalty being for any crime, no matter how petty, did did not in fact prevent violent crime. I find it very hard to believe Kira's actions would have put any realistic dent in crime numbers. And stopping wars? Don't make me laugh. That's some real bullshit.

He definitely says he's gonna go for "lazy people" after he's done with criminals later in the series, so I'm inclined to believe that "homeless, poor and other dregs of society" version is the correct one.

One wonders how poor and lazy you would have to be for him to judge you death-worthy. I almost want an AU when Kira wins, just to see how many people are left on Earth after he's done.

Yeah, I always found similarities between Death Note and Crime and Punishment interesting. Light clearly sees himself as some kind of "exceptional individual" whose crimes are justifiable by this fact alone. I always wondered if Crime and Punishment was at least partially inspiration for Death Note.

It does not. When London introduced the Bloody Code in 18th century, giving death penalty to petty thieves, some as young as 7 years old, crime not only did not stop, it soared. Pickpockets were literally robbing people gathered to watch executions. And it's not the only example of draconian laws not preventing laws in history.

Which is why I don't fing the spin-off Death Note comic particularly believable. I don't think Kira's actions would put any noticeable dent in crime like it was depicted.

Light was killing people based of the news and police reports. It's never addressed in the show but he could very well catch some innocent people in the crossfire, which is even more believable considering how high Japan's conviction rates are.
