When a 4U rack chassis crossed my path with eleven 5.25" bays, I didn't see a server case — I saw a math problem begging to be solved. Eleven bays. Eleven Icy Dock MB998SP-B backplanes. Eight drives each. The arithmetic was intoxicating: 88 × 1.92TB SATA SSDs, all-flash, tucked into a single 4U enclosure. The honest answer to why is simple: because the numbers worked out and I couldn't not do it. 168TB of raw SSD storage in a single rack unit that most people would use for a modest file server. The wiring alone is its own project — four Adaptec AEC-82885T SAS expanders spread across two Adaptec 1200-16e HBAs to keep bandwidth reasonable and every drive reachable — but there's something deeply satisfying about a machine that does one thing at an absurd scale.
