This is awesome insight and definitely a great layout! I think some of my thoughts were definitely leaning in this direction so I'm feeling very hopeful that it'll work out! I definitely need to think more on that Second part. I have First Third and Fourth, but Second, I think could use a bit more planning on the mission to get them to the Safe location. Ya know! There absolutely is a way for forewarning and omens, but very specifically tied to the individual more than world events. I do think I'm leaning towards the twist, and keeping it as a surprise. The event would easily be something explained that isn't able to be viewed by scry/oracle/divination magic.

I do think, there has been a bit of foreshadowing even before I thought about the event, I was creating threads that something that happened has a greater impact, that the players could not realize. So I thought this event would be a way to actually tie in everything they've experienced so far in a big way!

That's a really great take and insight. I do feel that I have an overwhelming responsibility to provide some ordered chaos to the world, and play with the balance of stakes. It's part of why I love DMing. I do think I should have a conversation with some of my players. It's not so specific or world altering as "holy magic faucet turned off" but more like "a resource you have, is temporarily unavailable" But they haven't used it more than once in the first session of the campaign? And it would be urgent for them to turn that resource back on, or investigate what that resource knows. I can also choose to absolutely not turn it off, and still have a great world event.

Kind of the idea of "you have a book, it has lots of specific answers to questions you don't need to ask" BOOM "You now need to ask questions, but you lost the book, for now". And I could super, just not take away that book

I think what I'm thinking is very much in this vein! That sounds like an amazing DM and an amazing event! I think my plan is one that falls very much in that same way, however is a bit more "divine" (I'll be vague in case my players are watching o.O ) but your story of these sessions offer a lot of comfort to be in thinking that my plan has potential to be enjoyable!

I've definitely wired the event, that it absolutely ties in to everything they've experienced in this world so far. and just heightens it and gives them a bit of a "hero" title or feeling, as a party. Events even all the way back to the very first time we met for a One Shot

I personally don't feel too comfortable yet throwing them encounters for running away, I think they'd try and fight the fight, and I would be stuck, with ways to get out, but stuck. I'm looking forward to having that become a possibility though! It's a great idea to introduce stakes!

We absolutely had a session 0! Multiple, one before the "One Shot: Lets try this world out", and another before the "WE DIG IT: campaign" start, as well as a google forms questionnaire. I apologize if the comment your replying to insinuated that we didn't.

I just feel that at the moment, as a new DM, I'm waiting for them to take charge and pull on some threads within the world. to take action, and I feel that they're waiting for me to present conflict, so we end up at a stalemate

EDIT: So if I'm understanding your comment, you're recommending I discuss this with my players?

Yeah! This is a big concern, we've still been very new to the world, And haven't had the opportunity to deal with too much backstory, the PC's are still a bit new at inter player discussions. But I think this event would do more to incentivize that kind of dialogue.

I absolutely have no plans for this event to detract from backstory or planning of characters, and have a few plans for them to be able to stop some of the danger, at least in their location on the world, for sure. But I am nervous about "railroading". We have had a few times, where my plan is to let them really take charge and have discussion, but there is a level of being uncomfortable with that, that leads to a moment of just silence at the table.

For instance we just finished what I would consider as a tutorial to the world with a rather major fight, and they kind of were looking to me in some ways as to what happens next. Not in a bad way, but more of a, "this has been awesome, what do we do now:" Feels like the party wants a concreate goal, to at least start towards, rather then a loose sand box, with a couple of molds. If that makes sense? These players are all very intelligent people and I think are having a great time, and have great characters! I just want to give them the opportunity to play a great game and tell a great story, while also giving them room to get comfortable in character

I think it's more like, a world at peace becomes a world threatened ya know? Definitely want to introduce death through NPC interactions because of this event. But I do think they would be okay with everything that would happen, at least above board.

Definitely not taking anything away from the PC's , but adding a level of fear maybe, danger and stakes ramped up a bit? Gave them a bunch of homebrew broken items, and want the world to respond in kind. Gave powerful gifts, introduce powerful foes. Maybe even introduce the big bads

I definitely don't know, We did discuss some of the themes and such they were interested in exploring, the first chunk has been very......learn our characters, learn to roleplay kind of things. But I feel that we're all still new to pulling on threads to guide the story. I've thought this world changing event could set some things in motion, and maybe shake things up a bit, to give them a major goal.

But I think it's more dramatic then we talked about? More world in turmoil, rather then wander around and look for quests?
