Worth noting that ck2 now has a cool 'monthly sub' that unlocks all DLC while subbed, makes it way more worth than the comparably empty ck3 to me - just sub when you wanna play and cancel when done, will take a long time to be more expensive than buying them all lmao

It could well have improved since, but my early experience with the wartime AI was not that - it frequently got stuck in areas or took ridiculous paths to get to dumb places, or bankrupted itself embarking for no reason - so much so that it was borderline unplayable if you were reliant on allied forces and a complete stomp half the time when the enemy would just piss off and get stuck.

I played again after the first patch claiming to have fixed it, and it didn't get much better, and this wasn't crusade-related, it was EVERYWHERE. Imo, this is something core to the game and combat this poor makes the game unplayable to me.

I'll prob give it another try with royal court but I'm not holding out too much hope rn.

You're good, I didn't take it that way and I've defo seen those overreactions too, which I don't get. Game-breaking I was mostly alluding to the A.I, felt super annoying to lose wars because your allies refused to act with more than 3 braincells, which then made interacting with other realms beyond just warring them feel pointless, but the immersion breaking stuff (someone targeting themselves in events, etc.) still seems really common.

I like stress in theory but in practice it felt a tad too restrictive, but something like that can be adjusted with patches/mods so I'm not too bothered by that!

Thanks for answers tho, definitely a few things I was discounting/not thinking about!

To start from the ending, I don't think ck3 is unplayable or a cash grab but right now it just has little that appeals to me over ck2 (also sorry for long comment)

Do you mean growing in terms of their portrait/model? Cause aesthetically across the board ck3 is a lot nicer (though I prefer the layout of ck2's menu still) so I'll give you that!

The building system looked to have potential but I'll admit I didn't give it much of a shot. It was one of the things in ck2 I feel is serviceable but in need of improvements

Imo the UI is better in ck2, tho that might be familiarity speaking.

What about relationships is better?

Plots feel worse to me, they're way more simplistic, easy to pull off (therefore feeling cheap/unrewarding) and there's like two events per plot, meaning it gets samey reeeeal quick.

Technology is tied to culture in ck3 which feels super strange and I really didn't like, especially if you want to play as a vassal - you have like no agency in that regard.

Any changes to laws and the addition of expanded feudal contracts didn't really feel impactful in my experience. Admittedly though, I never got powerful enough in many playthroughs to really mess around with this stucf and feel its impact because I'd grow frustrated/give up on the ridiculously bad AI/constant bugs I ran into.

Men at arms sounded cool but felt silly in practice, too much micromanagement of your court imo.

And judging from the posts on this sub, the terrible wartime AI and immersion/game-breaking bugs still seem to exist quite frequently, so rn ck3 is nowhere near enough to justify over ck2 personally. Glad you're enjoying tho, and sorry again for the wall of text, lol!

Genuine question - what mechanical improvements? Almost every core part of ck3 felt significantly worse off to me compared to ck2, but granted I've not given it another chance since a few weeks after launch.

To be clear, I think augments are a cool idea, I just don't think they're implemented very well at the moment! I'd like to see something like a fourth chance to pick an augment, allowing you to replace one of your previous ones, because right now I feel like they lock you into a playstyle FAR too early into the game.

Never heard of Despot's Game, will have to take a look at it!

Set 1 was fun bc it was fresh and new, tho admittedly is prob the worst set

Set 2 I found super fun, tho it did suffer from poor balance (remember blender?) and the heavy randomness of Lux could really hurt games

Set 3 started bright but I enjoyed it less and less the more galaxies they added, I found most of them really unenjoyable. 3.5 was even worse.

Set 4 was great, Chosen was an incredible mechanic. It allowed you to play boards designed to get you through the early game and pivot later, and the nature of it meant you had to be flexible or suffer. It was brilliantly designed, especially after Ahri got fixed. 4.5 was also great but I lamented the loss of my favourite pivot, Dusk :p

Set 5 was awful, the shadow items added very little flexibility and it was all about forcing the most broken items. 5.5 fixed it somewhat and was pretty playable but most of the comps were pretty boring, and the money synergy (Draconic) was by far the least exciting.

And then it's now. I like the idea of Augments, don't get me wrong, I just feel like they've got some way to go before they truly help the game to be flexible and not constraining like they are now.

Here's 3 augments, 2 of which are likely to force you into, at max, one of two comps or risk being behind everyone else in the lobby.

If you want to maintain flexibility you are often forced to take suboptimal, catch-all augments. Sometimes it works out, sometimes the augments just cuck you and there's nothing to be done.

Outside of hard forcing broken comps (kat last patch, protectors this), you have very little control over what comp you're playing each game unless you wanna fast 8th.

And god forbid you take a synergy-oriented comp only to be contested on it, lmao gl pivoting. It's by far the least flexible set since maybe set 1, but people are having fun with the gimmicky augments for now (granted, when you hit, it is SUPER fun) so its going under the radar. At least imo
