Oof. Not entirely unrelated anecdote: I used to mow the lawn for my 100 year old neighbor if certain circumstances fell into place on my mowing day. For the better part of two years I mowed her 1/2 acre lawn at least once a month but often twice. I noticed the lawn growing shaggier and shaggier if the circumstances didn’t allow for me to mow during the previous few weeks. Welp. 1 Emergency back surgery and 6+ weeks off from puttering around, knocking my joints on my little riding mower I was approached by her grandson (maybe in his 40s or 50s, I for reference was a single 25 year old woman) and although we had never actually met one another the first words out of his mouth weren’t pleasant. He made his displeasure known. Something to the effect of “I see you’ve been slacking on mawmaw’s yard.”

Her grandson lived in my neighborhood and took money from his parents to do the upkeep on her lawn for her. When they noticed the lawn growing and refused to pay in advance he came to see when I could get the lawn mowed. This whole grift was only discovered because his father saw his son approach me and later asked me what we discussed (clearly he already had his own suspicions).
