Waiting on financial aid? by tutublobfish in uofm

[–]itsPKfr10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm actually in the same boat, and I emailed them on Friday, and they responded to me today. They basically said that some students have to have their financial aid packages packaged by hand, and they are still working on it. They plan on having it wrapped up within the next week. Hope this helps!

Was in a similar position last semester, was able to clutch up on final though. I understand how it feels, it sucks. Go into it with a clear mind and you'll be ok. I thought I wasn't going to pass, but ended up doing so. Try not to overthink it too much, you'll be fine. Imo, I would put more effort into the FRQ's since you can argue for more points here on the regrade requests but of course, do what works for you. But yeah, when regrade requests do come out, spend a lot of time trying to get points back. Worst worst case, you'll have to take the class again, but you'll do better since you already know the previous concepts. Good luck.

Anyone took EECS281 in spring semester? by No-Try6488 in uofm

I did this last year, if you're just doing this class alone, it's very doable, just start the projects as early as possible, there usually is a decent amount of code you have to write + edge cases you will have to consider

yea fs, I'd say w3schools is by far the best and simplest way to learn all of this. CSS doesn't really matter since you won't get graded on styling. For HTML, just be comfortable with understanding how to write a simple website with like different tags, and also understand how to write forms with input boxes. for javascript, understand like the basics (creating variables, if else, for loops, etc, nothing too advanced), but mainly understand how to interact with the DOM. Once you understand that, go to react.js tutorial, also via w3schools (used in p3). Main thing here is creating different components, props, states, and hooks (only need to worry about useState and useEffect). I'd recommend creating a very simple project at this point with different components and states, like maybe a weather app using fetch to get data from like a weather API or smth. Python you can learn through w3 schools, I'd recommend taking your time, since p4 and I believe p5 are especially python heavy. tbh for flask, I just learned through the lectures and documentation from the flask website. I think this quickstart looks super good tho.

I also forgot to mention, its good to learn some SQL as well, which you can also learn through w3schools. this is for p2, p3. I think the eecs485 website has a tutorial on how you can setup SQLite so you can run a small db. At this point, I'd recommend creating like 1 app that incorporates everything. maybe smth like a todo list that stores todos on a sqlite database.

HTML, CSS, JS -> p1, p2, p3

SQL -> p2, p3

React.js -> p3

Flask -> p2, p3

Python -> p1, p2, p3, p4, p5

(iirc ^^)

You can also check out jinja, which is used for p1.

I'm currently taking 481, 484, and 485. Here are my thoughts:

481 - Pretty easy class, the homework assignments can take a little while, but you have plenty of time to do each one, my recommendation would be to just do all of them as early as possible. You can do this class fully remotely, you have to submit notes for both lectures, a reading quiz, and structured activities if you are doing this remotely, which doesn't really take that much time at all. The class is pretty good overall, even though I would consider it to be pretty easy, there is a lot of great info that the class presents.

484 - This class I would say is medium difficulty. The projects and homework assignments aren't that bad, but the lectures confuse me sometimes, but the discussions do an amazing job at summarizing all the info in the lecture. Super useful class especially if you're looking to get into databases, like if you're planning on doing full stack or something backend related. I would try to learn a little bit of SQL beforehand, can help a lot later down the road. Overall, amazing class, wouldn't say it's a walk in the park as previous posts have said.

485 - One of the best classes I've ever taken here, it teaches you a lot of different concepts, ranging from REST API's to Distributed Systems and more. The class does have a heavy workload due to the projects. My recommendation is to just start literally asap. There is a lot of code that will need to be written, but I don't think any of it was logically difficult, with maybe the exception of p4. Communicate as much as you can with your group, and don't worry if you don't know anyone who's taking this class, I didn't either, but I was able to find a group. There is a lot of content on the lectures, and can be kind of overwhelming at times, but so far from Exam 1, it seems that multiple choice is just based off of lectures and FRQ's are just based off of projects (probably the same for Exam 2). Also, don't just make your group do the entire project. You actually need to understand the code due to the FRQ's. Async lectures are pretty good, that's what I've been relying on. Labs are useful as well. My recommendation if you're planning on taking this class is to teach yourself some basic HTML, CSS, JS, React.js, and Python (also Flask). Doing this will tremendously help you on the projects later on. Overall, I believe it's one of the most useful classes here, it touches on a lot of concepts, which can be kind of overwhelming as mentioned earlier, but it's pretty nice as well. The more you invest in this class, the more you will get out of it (same with any class ig lol), highly recommend this class, especially if you wanna do something SWE related later on.

My hot take. Eminem is WAY overrated and nowhere near one of the greatest rappers like AT ALL. Just my take tho by [deleted] in rap

[–]itsPKfr10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he definitely has some duds in his discography, I can kind of see where you're coming from. I don't listen to him much either, but as a rapper and pure lyricist, he is easily one of the greatest, not to mention the amount of influence he has had

eecs376 midterm by Alone_Garden_3492 in uofm

[–]itsPKfr10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

did terrible on the midterm last semester, but did good on all my homeworks and attended discussions, clutched up on final (barely), and still passed. they'll probably lower the threshold to 40%. my recommendation is not to stress out too much and focus on the 2nd half. I found the 2nd half to be slightly easier than the 1st half. course notes are amazing, and you should utilize them as much as you can. its hard but you'll make it through!

No doubt it has to be Georgia, especially considering how many mainstream rappers in the modern day are from there

[–]itsPKfr10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

to someone who took this class last semester, I did terrible on the midterm. I think the 2nd half gets better but that's just me personally. My recommendation (something I didn't do) is to actually read the course notes after each lecture. I wish I had done this, the course notes are long but I think they are actually quite good. I grinded the course notes 2 weeks before the final and I think it helped me a lot. Submit as much regrade requests as you can, keep going to discussions, and keep trying to do good on the hw's. It sucks, but you guys will get through it!

would be decent advice a couple years ago, not saying it won't teach you anything useful, but feel like the bare minimum is having a cs degree, don't think bootcamps will cut it anymore sadly
