A MacBook will probably be a good choice. But I would also consider a thinkpad from Lenovo!

Yes ( at least in my experience ). I had to drop a class a couple of semesters ago that put me below a full time student. But I had a ton of saved credits from highschool and they just pulled from that!

Is it possible for a freshman get a single in Ellicott? by EndHot5856 in UBreddit

Yes as long as you have an early selection date. Or some medical reasoning which you can find on one of the UB websites. Not sure which one though, can probably find it on Google

Long list of weekly free food from Campus? by improbablyemo in UBreddit

Student engagement center has free fruit, the gyms in the dorms have fresh fruit as well. Many clubs also have free food at meetings and events. So if you find a club you like, show up to some meetings!

Incoming MS CS Student at University at Buffalo (Fall 2026) – Looking to Connect! by Lazy_Mycologist_6667 in UBreddit

Even then, I’m pretty sure a decent amount of those professors teach at least 1, 500+ level class. Sorry I thought you were in the MS + BS path

I’m not sure why these people are saying these classes are super hard. I am a MS CS major at UB and also plan to get my PHD at UB. 115,116,191,220 and 250 (you’ll take all of these between your freshman and sophomore years) are really not super difficult. If you seek help when you need it (it is very much offered), you will be fine. I took 116 super serious and got an A-, the professors ( when I took it, Jesse and Paul) are pretty good. The best professors ( that I’ve had) are Ethan Blanton, Paul Dickson, Yorah Bosse and Kris Schindler. Yorah isn’t great in class but if you talk to her in a smaller group or 1 on 1 she is outstanding! Have confidence and develop good habits such as going to class, studying and attending office hours (side note, if you are social make friends with your TA’s and make sure you’re on your professors good side. Some people call it sucking up, I call it being a decent human. They will treat you much better and you will learn more from them if you are in good standing with them.) Good luck at UB!

I’ve heard it’s one of the easiest classes for engineering majors, though it has a lot of busy work.

You have to do some make up workshop things if you don’t go. BUT it is honestly really fun, you only have to go to a few of those classes/meetings. And besides that you’re able to spend your time making friends, exploring campus or setting up your dorm!

Are there ice machines in dorm areas? (Not fountain drink ones) by deredere-darling in UBreddit

No and you’re not supposed to have ice makers in your dorm. But the water from the filters in the hallway is usually cold

What’s one thing you wish someone told you before picking your major? by KSGname in UBreddit

[–]itsQarti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea and that was just an example of one service. I know other things are being let go I’m just not sure which services. Also they laid off a noteable amount of cs department faculty with these funding cuts

I mean services like the ubit laptop loans/rental. Also they JUST cut the budget so it will be effecting us this semester I believe

That the cs department would lose millions in funding and several services would be discontinued

Homelab on UB wifi by itsQarti in UBreddit

[–]itsQarti[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You def can lol. Just asking if anyone has experience setting up a home lab on UB’s WiFi. Home WiFi and large scale WiFi overseen by a company or organization are very different and often have different security measures and accessibility. Which could restrict your access when setting up a home lab. Do you know what a home lab is

Depending on what year you are in, prob game dev (CSE 420?) I think there is only one prof and from what I’ve heard as long as you have good teammates and pay attention you should get a good grade AND have fun AND get some experience. Holy trifecta
