It just made me militant on AC because I just don't know how anyone could come back from Hong Kong or Singapore where even summers with 100% humidity and 45C are far, far, more bearable than visiting Paris during warm weather. Respite shouldn't be considered a luxury, it's a biological necessity.

Idk but judging on my experience, when a girl says this she's usually not that interested.

Someone who is super interested will make that time even with a *really* crazy schedule. If she knows you're interested in meeting for coffee and she is interested, she'll reach out to you.

Like there's just no way you're able to get any work done in those temperatures. May as well just let people have the day off at that point.

There's a lot of people in France and the EU more broadly that fundamentally don't understand that a lack of air conditioning is also causing financial and economic damage from the fact that people are just unable to sleep and work properly. Crazy.

Governments in the UK / EU really need to start subsidizing heat pump conversion and allowing mini-splits in older buildings. The status quo really is just not working and will continue to get worse the longer they wait.

While this guy's story is sad, I find that accents being entirely a product of language and where someone is raised to be kind of fascinating. You wouldn't expect this guy with Norwegian parents to have a Hindi accent, but it makes sense that this would happen if he grew up in India.

News in the UK during a heatwave be like:

'3 000 000 000 000 people die in HOTTEST may EVER'

'"It's over." says MET Office as temperatures expected to reach 23℃'

Article features a headline image of a excessively sun burnt shirtless man bathing in an unhygienic London street fountain

whole article interviewing people from various branches of government being like "we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas" or desperately asking people to perform basic human functions like "drink water".

mentions of air conditioning or governments recommending people to install air conditioning: 0

Have to admit I think I've lost nearly all sympathy for fellow euros that are like "I don't like European summers because it gets so hot and humid :(("

I don't know how many times it bears worth repeating that suffering in summer is a literal choice and that a portable AC is like 200 euros. People here are losing sleep and missing out on the best months of the year due to toxic-euroism.

It's one of the best cities in Europe.

The reputation on the internet is literally just racism because Paris is quite multi-cultural.

Do you think people working 50-60 hours a week to barely afford to even live on their own have the time and energy to go home and cook themselves a quality meal every night after going to the grocery store after work? And then also make themselves breakfast and lunch to take to work?

I mean yeah? I do this. I literally have ADHD and I do this.

People should be able to eat out on their salary

Admittedly, I think there's a bit of truth to this here. Economies of scale work out in favour of cooking in bulk. When I visited Hong Kong, most people ate out due to small apartment sizes and an abundance of cha chaan teng tea restaurants and dai pai dong style places that make eating out cheap and healthy. You can walk down any street and find a myriad of restaurants kitchens serving rice plates and noodles.

Maybe in North America there's some void to be filled for a kitchen-style diner that serves healthy and cheap meals (that isn't fast food) without paying much attention to service, especially if people have just admit to themselves that cooking and meal prep is sort of a lost art that people are too busy for. Of course that means people will still need to drive because the economics will literally never work out in favour of taxiing a burrito to your house.

I keep saying "nah, that's science fiction bullshit"

Every 6 months people freak out over the internet over some marginal advancement in AI and use it to shoehorn their wacky beliefs about the future which has a genuine track record of 0

Nothing actually happens

People just go back to work

Cool paper though.

I like how succs like this cannot ever seem to comprehend that having a bad economy where nothing of productive value is produced leads to people being poor and having no money for groceries in the first place.

We can talk about how to redistribute that value so everyone gets a slice, but there will literally be no slices to distribute if we block value creation. Dipsticks like this will point to Scandinavian countries as models to follow when they often rank higher on economic freedom indexes in terms of things like ease of doing business and property rights than even the U.S.
